I had already ordered my oil cooler from Nissan when they had me do an oil consumption test first, which I failed.

QUESTION: Should I have them install oil cooler when they replace short block or wait and see if new engine runs cooler?

My driving habits are different from many. I rarely get on the freeway so 4th gear is an unusual gear for me to be in. Most all driving is done going up and down a winding mountain road. Up hill runs the temp up quickly.
My wife and I do a lot of the same driving, and with her driving at a snail's pace, the oil temperature still creeps up above 240 sometimes. And that's on an engine that hasn't burned a drop of oil in the past 1500 miles.

I'm not sure that the two symptoms are related in the short term, but oil consumption can definitely lead to higher oil temperatures in the future. You'd have to have pretty massive leak down into the crank case to actually raise oil temperature significantly.

I'd just have them install it - cooler oil is never a bad thing as long as it's still the correct viscosity once the engine is warm.
