install oil cooler?

I am getting a new short block due to oil consumption. Yesterday was the first 80+ degree day of the summer. My oil temp went from 225* to 260* in a mile and a half of a very spirited up hill drive. Note avatar.

I had already ordered my oil cooler from Nissan when they had me do an oil consumption test first, which I failed.

QUESTION: Should I have them install oil cooler when they replace short block or wait and see if new engine runs cooler?

My driving habits are different from many. I rarely get on the freeway so 4th gear is an unusual gear for me to be in. Most all driving is done going up and down a winding mountain road. Up hill runs the temp up quickly.

it's not that hard to install those oil coolers, no? probably worth the investment for you. for me, my oil temps rarely go over 220F.

My wife and I do a lot of the same driving, and with her driving at a snail's pace, the oil temperature still creeps up above 240 sometimes. And that's on an engine that hasn't burned a drop of oil in the past 1500 miles.

I'm not sure that the two symptoms are related in the short term, but oil consumption can definitely lead to higher oil temperatures in the future. You'd have to have pretty massive leak down into the crank case to actually raise oil temperature significantly.

I'd just have them install it - cooler oil is never a bad thing as long as it's still the correct viscosity once the engine is warm.

Cool beans. I will have them put it on then. If they don't give me the run around about testing their short block solution first.

Since that other thread has been locked, I'm going to give you my quick, honest opinion on that situation. I would just let them replace the block and keep the heads. In reality, it will be fine unless they really screw something up. It will definitely be a big improvement over having an engine that drinks oil.

May I contact you in the future on your break in procedure? Or steer me towards other posts on the subject? Thanks.
