driving manual hard

I'm a newb to manual....

Is it ok to constantly switch gears at nearly redline on each gear?

I love speed!

Also, is it ok to cruise on the highway on 3rd or 4th gear the whole time???
i dont care for fuel economy... i just want to rag the hell out of my nismo but not harm the engine...

My nismo is a month old and has 3000 miles already!

Zsteve 07-17-2010 09:28 PM

its not gonna last long like that

mspeasl 07-17-2010 09:30 PM

Change gears...!

You need to highway drive in 6th and there is no need to redline when driving normally. You are putting unnecessary additional miles on the motor by doing so...........!

just out of curiosity, how old are you jacknismo?

jacknismo 07-17-2010 09:38 PM

31

jacknismo 07-17-2010 09:42 PM

i don't see the point in cruising where ever i go... if i wanted to do that i would have gotten a caddy....

that's just how i roll...

just curious in how to drive a manual...
such as how to drive it normal???
and how do you drive it fast all the time???

If you want to drag every where and beat the hell out of the engine then redline is good. I dont know why you would want to cruise in 4th gear.

I say redline it and stay in 3rd for the most power and speed. Then when it blows up we have one less Z killer on the road.

i like the immediate response when i punch the pedal without having to shift from 6th to 3rd or 4th....

junior_jam 07-17-2010 09:46 PM

Lower RPM = lower revolutions per minute = lower engine use per unit time = lower wear on engine

Don't ride around at high RPMs if you plan to keep the car.

TheSnakeJake 07-17-2010 09:47 PM

:shakes head:

LunaZ 07-17-2010 09:48 PM

You might want to check your oil.

mrcardio 07-17-2010 09:49 PM

It makes more sense to cruise in 6th on the HWY because it's just a lot more efficient. Shifting at redline every gear really isn't appropriate unless you're drag racing. And yes, you’re wearing down your car faster constantly ragging it out. There is no particular rpm per say you must shift at, just use common sense. Learn how to down shift if you want immediate acceleration.

PapoZalsa 07-17-2010 09:51 PM

OMG! Shifting at redline all the time? Poor car.... :wtf2:

jacknismo 07-17-2010 09:52 PM

i didn't buy the Z to cruise on low RPMs... I bought it to ride the hell out of it... isn't that what a "sports car" should be used for??? isn't the engine made for that type of driving?

best response so far....

i don't have the so called common sense like you all...
i just do what i feel is fun...
I appreciate the decent response.

jacknismo 07-17-2010 09:57 PM

don't get me all wrong... i love the Z and i don't think there is a respect issue here with my Z and fellow z owners .. I just want to fully utilize it without blowing the engine.

well, if continue to drive like you have described you will likely blow the engine...

If you dont care about reliability or longevity then you can redline it every time. What everyone is saying is that it is not ideal to do that to the engine EVERY single shift. Its fun and everyone does it once in a while but it puts some wear on the engine as well. Now for cruising on the highway in 4th there is no good reason to do that. Its not like anyone can really hear the exhaust when your cruising going 70.

and in ATL probably putting people in danger driving that way too.

SkyZ 07-17-2010 10:01 PM

okay you sound serious, so imma give you a serious answer. this will definitely blow ur engine. it wont last for very long like this. you say "isnt it built for this" well simple answer is no.

mmm liken it to a person. if you ran all the time just non stop running everywhere wouldnt you "blow an engine" u gotta walk and run. baby the thing when ur driving it daily and when you really wanna "push it" drop a few gears and gun it. if u treat it nicely it will treat you nicely. dont rag on it without any cause to such as highway cruising.

mspeasl 07-17-2010 10:02 PM

yanking our chains...................

Cmike2780 07-17-2010 10:05 PM

Your revs should always match your speed. You can cruise in 3rd going 35mph for example. Keep your revs under or around 3000 rpm unless your accelerating and you should be fine. You don't need to keep the rev's up to go fast. Just work on shifting faster instead of putting strain on the engine. The big draw to having a manual is your ability to anticipate when to shift. Staying a gear lower than "cruising" will give you the same effect your looking for. You can drive it like a race car, it your car and your money. I could be wrong, but I thought the Z has a black box. If your engine blows up, don't blame Nissan for voiding your warranty

Just so you know, keeping the rev's up will heat up the oil faster than you think. Limp mode will kick in & won't let you pass 3500 rpm to save the engine.

Just go ahead a reach the fuel cut-off everytime you shift. It is more fun!

Ever see Blue Brothers? It's cool when the pistons shoot through the hood.

spearfish25 07-17-2010 10:24 PM

Think of it this way. There is a reason why Formula One engines only last one race.

fullmonty 07-17-2010 10:26 PM

To you guys ride your trannys hard? I know I like to start of gentle and then smack it around a little bit

mrcardio 07-17-2010 10:32 PM

You would probably be a lot happier with a car with more low / mid range torque like a BMW 335i or Audi S4. The cars feel fast even at 2000rpms and you won't have to rev the engine to the moon to get moving and feel the rush.

this is true. the 370z is lacking in torque..

but it makes up for it everywhere else!!

While I totally agree with your reasoning, your facts are hinkey. 19 races. 8 allowed engines. Most teams don't use all of the engines.
Maybe the better statement is "there's a reason F1 engines cost as much as they do".
Plus, there are no pedestrians on an F1 track.

Better example would be NASCAR in the late 90s before they outlawed qualifying engines... An engine that would last only two laps.
