How many gallons to fill up?

I've driven 20-30 minutes after the car says I have --- miles left in the tank. Where I was, I had to. When I filled up, I still had 1.5 gal. in the tank

Some people argue that the bottom of the tank has contaminents floating around. Others say that is not true. No objective info out there that I have seen either way.
