What's your average MPG for your 370z?

So, I've had my 370z Sports + Touring + NAV, 6MT for a month now, and I've been getting some pretty ridiculous MPG since. I've been driving 3/4 city and 1/4 Hwy and I always leave the A/C on.

For the first 500 miles, I've been shifting before 3000-3500 RPM. And the AVG MPG registered at 15.9.
Then for the next 500 miles, same case, but I would shift in the range of 3000-4000 RPM and it's starting to pick up to 16.5 MPG.

Finally, after broken in my car at 1200 miles, I would shift within the range of 3000-4500 RPM and the best I got was 17.4 MPG.

I would turn off the A/C and it wouldn't make any difference with the MPG, I'd drive 1/2 Hwy and 1/2 city and it's still 17.4 MPG. My AVG speed is 26 mph.

The MPG rated for this car is 18 city and 26 for hwy. To be honest, I was expecting this car to be in the middle of the 2 MPG. Somewhere around 20-22 MPG, but it seems like I'm not even close.

Sure I understand, I'm driving a Manual transmission so I'm not gonna get as good of a fuel economy as an Automatic transmission considering they tweak these AT parameters optimize to be as fuel efficient as possible. Also, I have the A/C on all the time.

But here's another comparison, my other car is a 2007 Lexus IS250 AT. It's rated at 21 city and 29 hwy. And I've been also leaving the A/C on always, similar amt of city and hwy driving, but I'd always get around 25 MPG (right between the two rated MPG. How's that the case? Is it really because AT is THAT efficient? Or is it because it's a Toyota/Lexus? Or is it the way I drive?

And if it's the way I drive (and I consider myself driving really easy on the throttle most of the time), what's the best MPG are you guys getting on your 370z?

Jeffblue 05-10-2010 02:02 PM

is250=2.5 liter engine, 370z=3.70 liter engine. my altima coupe has a 2.5 liter engine, gets about 25 mpg on average as well. bigger engine, less MPG, all things being equal.

true to that, but I would think there's a reason why they have a rating for a baseline comparison because fuel efficiency can vary by a lot even with the same/similar size engine capacity. I doubt Lexus IS350 is way off from their rating. It'll still be in the avg of the 2 CTY & HWY rating.

Then there's a debate about it being a sports car and the other one isn't. But both outputs similar HP. I'm just more interested in how well, if at best I'd ever be able to even get the MPG of over 20 for my car as it is rated at 26MPG for max on HWY only. I'm not being naive because I know those ratings aren't ever reachable because those tests are setup differently than our daily driving. But 15.9 MPG? 17.4 MPG? that's just not even close...

waaaasabi 05-10-2010 02:06 PM

My average is around 18.X but it's almost all city driving.
And because its all city driving, my average MPH is somewhere around 16.X... :(
Pretty sure the A/C is affecting your MPG; not sure why it didn't go back up when you turned it off though. Are you doing the MPG calculations by the on-board computer or other means (i.e. tracking usage through gas receipts)?

370Zsteve 05-10-2010 02:07 PM

18.8 mpg

25 Hwy

shadoquad 05-10-2010 02:10 PM

It varies widely based on how I'm driving her, and I also have a 6-spd manual. When I test drove a Z and was really playing with it, cranking the engine and whatnot, I was getting 14mpg. In my first week with the one I bought, I drove it very gently but only around city neighborhoods. I was hitting roughly 17-18. I took it to PA this past weekend and was driving mostly in 6th gear and above 65 mph, and I averaged over 21mpg. I didn't vote in the poll above, because my answer is multiple.

DjSquall 05-10-2010 02:16 PM

16-20 liters/100km which is 15-12 MPG. I do a lot of city driving and take off as fast as I can within legal limits.

wishihadnav 05-10-2010 02:24 PM

17ish

scruffydog 05-10-2010 02:39 PM

yea, i would think the A/C at max affects me 0.5-1 MPG. Right now i'm tracking it with both the on dash computer and the one on the NAV. Sometimes it varies by ~0.4 MPG but right now it's locked on 17.4 MPG as the best.

I would also track it by the number of gallons since last fill up and the amt of miles I can drive before i reach to about the same point. It's usually around 320 miles max for 17 gallons.

My buddies' 2007 Corvette get's 19 MPG and that's a V8 much bigger engine. More reason as to why I'm concerned. I should at least get 20 MPG.

Vette engines are ridiculously efficient. I wouldn't worry about that. The current Z06 was the first production road car to achieve 500hp and have a high enough mileage to avoid the U.S.'s "gas guzzler" tax.

6spd 05-10-2010 02:54 PM

i get anywhere from 21-24, and im not the easiest driver by any stretch. i couldnt imagine what it'd take to get 18, ouch... i'd say im about 70/30 city/HW.

whoa....really? AWESOME!!!! I can live with those numbers!

Is that what it says on your computer meter? If not, what does it register as? MPG/MPH

terbo 05-10-2010 04:07 PM

I believe my computer monitor reads 19.8ish MPG. Doing the math for the past few tanks, I have gotten on average 21.5 mpg, highest being 22. When I first bought the car I was getting around 17 or 18mpg, as I've owned it it's only increased, which is to be expected as everything is broken in.

That's really good news! Mine's been the same way too, it's been increasing since I got the car, but mine plateau at 17.4 MPG, hopefully it'll keep climbing...

I normally wouldn't complain but gas is getting more and more expensive. My excuse to myself to drive this car over my 1994 Honda Accord EX is because I like to think it's a much newer, more efficient so I'd save more money in gas - but that's not even true anymore because I only need to put the lowest grade fuel in my Honda Accord and with this car I have to put Premium. Even if the 370z get more miles per gallon the cost per gallon ends up cancelling out the extra miles I can get on top of my Honda Accord (which I like to make believe is a much less fuel efficient car) Sadly, Honda's are known to be super great cars for not breaking down and have super good fuel economy. :(

Soygen 05-10-2010 05:17 PM

I've put 600 miles on mine and my computer is reading 16.9 mpg. The vast majority of those 600 miles have been to work in rush hour, though the traffic isn't too heavy on my commute. I could probably shift earlier and get a couple more mpg.

my computer read 22, but when i calculate in between fill ups (since i got the FI exhaust and KN filters) ive been consistently getting upwards of 24. looks like this current tank is gonna be 22.5, but that was because i have been romping it around town more than usual.

I gotta tell you, first 2 fill ups after the FI exhaust got me 24, and that after an exhaust mod!?! go figure, even with the hard driving to enjoy the exhaust i got about 2mpg better than my previous average of 20-22. Using the gears properly helps save fuel too.

MUST GET F.I. CBE.....:happydance:

AutoX Z 05-10-2010 08:48 PM

Flat out on a track it gets 3-4 mpg....

Daily is right around 20

spearfish25 05-10-2010 09:01 PM

"City" is very arbitrary.

For example, driving around a suburb is considered 'city' but one might do 30-40mph for a good stretch between traffic lights. However, 'city' for me in downtown Chicago is stop and go driving with stop signs/lights every 100 feet. The gas mileage numbers you'll get in these two situations will vary greatly, yet they are both 'city' driving. Highway is a bit more standardized being that you have to be on a highway and expectedly doing about 65-75mph.

Zsteve 05-10-2010 09:04 PM

so where are those 30+ mpg guys that were here before? still shows 0.

Pharmacist 05-10-2010 09:16 PM

about 16 mpg or so

seungklee 05-10-2010 09:21 PM

It's been two and half weeks since I bought the car and have been driving around a lot in both city and freeway. However, I believe I've done more freeway driving than city. I get around 20~21 mpg avg. I should get better mpg once I break her in. :) My car is 40th with 6spd manual. Mileage is at 760. Can't wait to break her in!

scruffydog 05-10-2010 10:22 PM

It's really nice to know some people here actually get 20+ mpg because that means Nissan did make some improvements on the fuel economy from 350z to 370z.

Just out of curiosity, are we calculating these numbers from your gas receipts on how many gallons you filled up (or other methods) or are you guys straight up reading these values from your computer?

As much I don't like the numbers the car computer's giving me, I think it's a better method for us to read off the computer reading because it's a good baseline for us to compare the values.

I think some people getting over 22 MPG is just way too high and there's no way we can really validate that they measured it right. Have anyone actually got 22 MPG+ reading on their computer meter? That's good stuff if you did.

Otherwise, if you're calculating these MPG #'s on your own, the only way to validate it is the computer reading. The car computer tracks the average speed so at least we can be more consistent and not have to debate about amount City & Highway drive.

Also, it'd be nice to also tell us what your AVG MPH (Speed) states on your car computer meter. =) Thanks!

I had reset my trip computer shortly before getting the 21+mpg figure, but yeah, that's where I got it.

I have a pretty heavy foot most of the time so keep that in mind. The massive dip in MPG was my track weekend.

Jeffblue 05-11-2010 11:07 AM

hey just some food for thought, both of my parents have infiniti G Sedans, my mom has a G37, my dad a g35, they each get around 18 on average. both automatic transmissions. my mom does almost only local driving, and has a really light foot, my dad does more highway, but has a heavy foot.

Zsteve 05-11-2010 02:09 PM

I am reading 22.3 on my meter and I have a slightly heavy foot but I do get alot of areas here in TX where I can cruise at a steady speed too.

Boosted Josh 05-11-2010 02:20 PM

It looks like I'm getting ~21-22. I've only had the car a couple weeks though so that number isn't based on a lot of miles.

My wife's EX35 gets about 21.

We both drive about 75% highway. I usually cruise at about 80.

Edit: 6-sp, touring, sport

Push370zzz 05-11-2010 02:33 PM

I get about 14 in the city, mostly 50mph quickly for about 1500ft at a time...

took the words right out of my mouth:tiphat: my "city" is much like what you first described, but at about 45-55 mph.

Justin1686 05-11-2010 09:50 PM

i do mostly stop and go travel where i am. and i get about 18.5 mpg on the reader and by calculating it on fill-up. this past fill-up tho which was mostly all highway, i got about 23mpg on calc.

i gotta say, i cant complain about the gas mileage with this car. not as good as my 4 cylinder camry that i used to own, but SO much better then my infiniti suv that i drive about 3 or 4 days a week.

MareImbrm 05-11-2010 10:07 PM

I just drove 600miles to and from a wedding this weekend, with the cruise set to 80-90 (with occasional passing at 100ish) I averaged 24.6 highway. Driving around miami I average 19-21. I am a bit more impressed than I expected to be with the gas mileage. I love my Z

scruffydog 05-11-2010 11:58 PM

to be honest, i'm actually very happy to see what most of you guys are able to get with the Z. Although i'm not getting these numbers, I'm just glad that the car can actually do better MPG than what I expect.

Keep this poll going! Thanks a lot everyone for sharing this useful information.

Dwain65 05-16-2010 12:56 AM

I took my 2nd long road trip since I bought my Z last May. The only difference between the first trip was I had under 1100 miles on the car and traffic was heavy. My avg mpg was 22. I have to say I was disappointed. On this recent trip with 11,600 miles on the odometer at speeds between 75 - 90 100+ on ocassion I was able to avg 26.4. These engines definately do better after 10K miles.

Matt 05-16-2010 03:17 AM

I think if you're getting 22+ mpg in the city, you're driving it like a sissy. I don't fall below 4k RPMs unless I'm stopped.

jazz 07-21-2011 12:31 PM

i have 2200 km on the car getting 16.2l per 100km...shake head! i feel this is poor!

Econ 07-21-2011 12:47 PM

17.4

I had a 09 Corvette with 436 HP. cruising on the highway it would get 28 to 30, sometimes more, and it had the performance rear end gear ratio. At about 70 MPH it would be turning 1700 rpm on the tach.

ZzzZz 07-21-2011 04:21 PM

A little under 21MPG is what I average with 50% Hwy/City driving. I shift at 2k RPM when oil temps are under 180 and at 3k RPM after it's warm, sometimes skipping gears (1,3,5,6).

I'm "heavy-footed" and drive at 80% of the car's limit where I can and "light-footed" in traffic.
