I've been known to putt along in 6th at 35/40 mph. It's fine so long as just cruising, especially on the flatlands here in IL. The gearing is really wacked

The gearing is really wacked on both the G and the 370Z. Top gear (6th) is usually highway/over drive, but to be cruising at 65 mph in 6th gear at 2500 rpm is just wrong. My old camaro would be doing 80 mph at barely 2K rpm in 6th. From what I recall, something like 2800 or 2900 rpm is 80 mph in this car.
