Don't worry, I'm in the same boat. I took it easier than I truely wanted to, but I didn't follow the book verbatum. For about the first 500 miles I kept it under 4K, varied the gear, etc. After that it was a gradual increase with an occasional quicker shift and higher rpm pull.
