Each of the major houses has an animal. The Baratheons had a Stag, the Lannisters are the Lions, and the Starks are the Wolves. There was a bunch of animal stuff going on in the books that you don't see here. To recap (some of which was in the series, but not highlighted very well):

Ned Stark's party finds 6 Direwolves in the snow. Their mother died to being gored by a Stag, I think. Ned has 6 children counting his bastard son: Robb, Bran, Rickon, Jon Snow, Sansa, Arya. They each get one wolf, and all the wolves are named (Robb - Grey Wind, Bran - Summer, Rickon - Shaggydog, Jon - Ghost, Sansa - Lady, Arya - Nymeria). Ghost is notable because he was an albino and the runt of the litter, and given to the bastard of Ned's litter.

There's obviously some kind of nebulous psychic link between the Direwolves (which are some kind of magical creature from beyond the wall, not regular wolves) and their owners. Grey Wind dies in the Red Wedding we just saw, as did Robb. Summer and Shaggydog are still with Bran and Rickon. Ghost is still somewhere in Jon's part of the world, but they're currently separated. Sansa's Lady was killed by Ned after the incident where Arya's wolf bit Geoffrey's arm (much earlier in the story). The death of her dog while she lives on is a sort of sign that she's leaving the Direwolves' house (Starks), and she does basically turn on them to try to marry Geoffrey, which doesn't turn out so well. Arya chased off Nymeria to save her, but we don't know where she is now.
The Stark are decedents of the First Men/Free folk who lived along side the Children of the Forest (people who carved the faces on the wierwood trees). The Stark children and technically each Stark descendent has the ability to become a "skinchanger" and view/control animals through some kind of telepathy, but only Bran has embraced it. The others do this subconsciously. It's how the direwolves are so tamed around them and others they consider friends. The Starks direwolves represent their "spirit" and a reflection of who they are becoming. Sansa/Lady for example, is constantly punished for things beyond her control. Just when you think she's going to have the fairy tale ending, it gets killed and taken away through no fault of her own. Arya/Nimeria is lost in the wild and becomes more vengeful towards those who hurt her pack. Along the way, just as Arya, creates a new pack of her own. Her character is certainly one to follow closely and often underestimated. Jon/Ghost are poised to be protectors of the wall and battle the white walkers. Rob/Grey Wind die similar deaths...caged and helplessly slaughtered. Bran/Summer & Rickon/Shaggy dog's relationship are more direct. Their direwolf's demeanor is very similar to who they are as a person. Rickon's wolf Shaggydog for example, becomes angry and starts biting people when Rob goes off to war, something they left out in the tv series.

I don't think I've ever been this shocked watching a show. Lucretia, Oenamus dying in Spartacus pales in front of what happened in Game of Thrones.

I'm too lazy but you could probably find in this thread where I hit this part of the books. I was strongly considering putting the book down and quitting. Robb's story in the books was more of a side story, the tv show made him seem too much of a main character. I'm glad I stuck with it and kept reading.

not really a spoiler but whatever

Gee, what would have to happen in a season finale to top the previous week's episode?

I agree about the wolves, they're far less interesting and used in the show. But I imagine that has to do either with cost or insurance/risk reasons. I mean, to be honest it's hard to tell if the wolves used are real or CGI at times. If CGI, that's expensive. If real, that's risky for actors and potentially time-consuming to get correct. I imagine it's entirely a cost decision. Unfortunate, since it's vastly intriguing in the books to compare the Stark kids and their dogs and such; adding another dimension of mystery and trying to predict what happens to one's fave characters.

I actually like how they did Robb in the show. He really was an after-thought in the books. We just get shoved much of his character/demeanor without really feeling any of it. When his events unfold at the Red Wedding, I just didn't care so much as was just surprised by it. Catelynn on the other hand...

I think it just has to do with how we only saw Robb from other characters, and I think only had a handful of chapters centered on him. The show has done him good service (both in the writing but also the actor and those around him).

Actually they're both in the show. They've used various mixes of dogs (Huskies I think), trained real Wolves, CGI, and just plain perspective trickery. The problem they face with all of this is that the Direwolves start out as pups, but eventually should be the size of a small horse when fully grown. The trained regular wolves with a little bit of camera/perspective -trickery do well for their adolescent state, but eventually they'll have to use a lot more CGI tricks to get them up to full adult size.

I believe they used Northern Inuit's, not huskies. Only reason I remember is because I read somewhere that the actress that plays Sansa was rumored to have adopted her "direwolf" who played Lady on the show after filming was over.

Oh you're right. And I just found out there's a wikia site about all of this, which makes things so much easier to keep track of: Direwolves - Game of Thrones Wiki

I haven't posted in awhile because I would sound like a broken record; the screenwriters and George R.R. Martin are doing an excellent job with the TV series. The Red Wedding was exceptionally well done.

It is my fondest wish that Arya and Nymeria get back together at some point and get medieval on some people's a$$es.

I have the feeling that they will hire some really hot actresses to portray Oberyn Martell's bastard daughters, which I am really looking forward to. The way things are going they will probably condense a lot of the long-winded stuff in A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons into a more eminently more watchable version for the HBO series. Kudos HBO!

I love the discussions I am having with the non-reading Throneheads about the Red Wedding episode...
