Well if you want to do it the super safe but annoying way, get a heat gun (or borrow mine). Takes forever but you won't melt your headlight.
|
Although I will never recommend anybody using heat gun to open headlight housing but whatever works for you guys! Just because the oven method always works for me doesn't mean it'll work for others.

Clear housing down on a pan with foil
|
There was a cookie sheet, with tin foil on it.. the head light was facing up side down..
|
First time we did it - zero problems. 2nd time, fried headlights.
|
2nd time we were convinced we had the temp wrong because lol yeah ruined headlights.
The replacement headlights plus the fix are going to cost me just about $900 (depending on whether or not people buy parts from me). |

I use a cardboard and wrap it with aluminum foil with headlight facing up at all times. With the lens facing down there's too much heat concentrated on one spot. That is what I have been suspecting happened.
Alright guys, enough of me trolling here. East west, let me know if you need that projector. I have the passenger side and I have no use for it. I would be happy to help out another member in need of it |
You didnt have any issues?
|
That makes sense, when I think about it, the two sets that got fried, burned in the same spot, so that does make sense, and I would bet you, because the lense isnt a flat surface, the part that burned was the part that the headlight was physically setting on top the cookie sheet.
|
Never had any issues!
Yeah, the cookie sheet is for food so doesn't stick. It won't hold any heat back like aluminum foil and with the lens facing downwards there's always a good chance something may mess up. With lens facing upwards it'll take longer to bake but I feel really safe using that method. |
Done deal, thats what I'll do then.

I'm going to go with "use a professional service that modifies headlights" instead. At least that way, if it gets screwed up they get to buy the next pair lol.
Edit: Daedalus' prices are SUPER reasonable and if you're in the area, you don't even have to pay for shipping. Downtime is less than 1 day. |

Im NOT gonna be using a professional, because I feel confident enough to do the job myself, although I'm gonna get ahold of Ryan, and ask him to assist me, we work well together.
|
I could *probably* do it myself but I don't feel like rolling the dice again. The housings just cost too damn much to take chances.
|
lower the oven temp, leave it in the oven longer
no risk of melting anything! and don't put the lens down!!!!! |

Brother, I wont know for certain until I get home from vacation, which will be on the 20th. Im almost certain its the driver's side headlight.
|
Dropped off the swap headlights at Daedalus last night. They're going to take measurements and then get back to me.
Edit: I'm dropping the car off in Sterling tomorrow night to get the wheels powdered. Should have it back thurs/fri at the latest. Plan on dropping it off Fri night and getting back the car and the disassembled lights next Sat. Shahid, if you want to swing by at some point I can give you the outer shells and that extra tube of sealant. |
