Some people pack steel wool in the O2 bungs to filter the exhaust gasses and trick the sensors. The defoulers just back the O2 sensor farther out of the exhaust

Some people pack steel wool in the O2 bungs to filter the exhaust gasses and trick the sensors. The defoulers just back the O2 sensor farther out of the exhaust stream for a similar effect.
The latter is probably better for longevity. I'd imagine the steel wool would rust away after a while.
