F1 tire suppliers is all about who pays the most to be the official supplier. Not about performance.
Pirelli replaced Bridgestone at the start of the 2011 season. Previously, Bridgestone was the exclusive supplier since 2007. From 2001-2006 Michelin and Bridgestone were both competing suppliers. Ultimately Michelin pulled out (i.e. F1 decided 1 supplier was better and Bridgestone bid higher). Bridgestone entered F1 in 1997 and was the exclusive supplier from 98-00. The last time Pirelli was on a F1 car was 1991. |
