racing is bad. a spirited drive at about 75% of the limit is rewarding and fun. find like minded people to ride with and it will be well worth the time

eastwest2300 01-03-2012 11:29 PM

Yeah, i mean, if I go, I'll definitely run it a couple times, but definitely not into trying to break any records.

m4a1mustang 01-03-2012 11:38 PM

Yeah there isn't much to see on the Dragon since it's so wooded. Lots of the other roads are very pretty, though.

HKYStormFront 01-03-2012 11:41 PM

yea very true, especially the skyway. highly recommend that one. it's a great drive across the spine of a mountain range. makes for some epic pull-offs

m4a1mustang 01-03-2012 11:43 PM

It also makes for a very fast drive. :D

HKYStormFront 01-03-2012 11:44 PM

there is that too...

Yeah I'm pretty much out for ZDayZ this year. Planning a trip to Pakistan with my parents after I graduate, so I'll need to save all my money for that. I should be able to make it for ZDayZ 2013 though

You sound like me....im a granny driver and the M3 owners always hated me when we went up on Skyline Drive cause I wasnt driving like an a$$hole, I was taking in the scenery, stopping off on overlooks to take pics, going on hikes LOL.

The dragon is overrated. Everyone should do it at least once, but its too much work and the other roads in the area are so much better.

I'll agree with this. The Skyway is a lot of fun and there are a bunch of other roads out there that absolutely have to be driven as well. The Dragon does get repetitive after a while but it's still a ton of fun and it's really tight so it will keep you from reaching plaid speed and getting into big big trouble. :icon17:

I have to say I probably have more fun driving Hellbender to/from the Dragon than I do on the Dragon itself. I don't know if anyone got zapped for this last year but on Friday or Saturday the cops set up a speed trap at the boat ramp right ahead of the bridge (on the return run to the Resort)... if you aren't careful you can get some big, big tickets right there.

tooohip 01-04-2012 09:39 AM

Yeah hellbender is way more fun. I'm always paranoid about one of those speed traps though.

Yep... if you put your foot in it and left it there you would be 120+ on that straight where they set up.

Yep, I know that section of Hellbender and you're right... always freaked out a bit about keeping my foot on the gas right before the boat landing :eekdance:

I always backed off well ahead of that area just because it seems like the perfect spot to get tagged.

How long is the drive from Fontana to the Dragon? Just wondering.

GM_Traitor3.5 01-04-2012 11:12 AM

Like 20 mins I think?

I want to say the run down Hellbender is around 10 miles or so. It's awesome, though.

Maybe in a Maxima... :stirthepot:

I checked the map and it says 8.8 miles and 11 minutes. So we get there in about 7-8. :)

I love the left turn out of the Resort onto Hellbender (28). It's awesome because the road turns downhill and veers right a bit, and the trees close in, so it's like you're driving off into a tunnel. What makes it even more epic is you can hear the echo of engines in the distance, and sometimes another group of cars is returning from a run as you go out and they give you a friendly "go get 'em" wave. It's just awesome.

It doesn't look as epic on the GoPro (thanks wide-angle distortion), but in person it's quite awesome.

At 2:05 you can see the area that would get you in trouble on the return leg.

Ive watched this vid numerous times:tup: yeah actually when I was just looking at that map 28 looked like one of the most fun roads.

:iagree: You have to keep it in your lane and never, ever count on oncoming traffic to do the same. Be vigilant!

You know what scared the **** out of me last year... :bowrofl:

Hoping to get a set of Hanpoops before the trip (fingers crossed)
