Jacked the rear of the car up and placed a jack stand under the rear pinch welds on each side. I put chocks around the front wheels to keep the car from rolling.

    Question: with the rear wheels off the ground, how does having the car in gear have any effect on it not rolling?

    It doesn't make any effect when the rear wheels are off the ground! You need to put chocks on the front tires or place the car in 4 jack stands.
