Meanest headlights ever!

dmhenderson 06-11-2014 04:20 PM

Cliff Kim at Daedalus Customs is responsible for the headlights. I love them too.

Where did you hear that the aeromotive pumps have corrosion issues with e85? Interested because I'm on the fence with e85 and have an aeromotive pump installed.

Frank Hill (Hill's Garage). Was initially the pump we were going to go with but said he did a little digging and they have problems especially with E85.

As far as I'm concerned, Frank is the word of the almighty when it comes to these cars so I'm gonna go with whatever he recommends.

dmhenderson 06-15-2014 07:19 PM

So the car is at Hill's still. I dropped it off a little earlier than they would have liked but I was concerned about the oil leak. In the meantime, I spent Friday afternoon was slow so I spent my time polling local E85 stations to figure out which ones don't change up their E85 mix at all.

Found 2 less than 5 minutes from my house, bought 3 five gallon canisters at Home Depot and filled them up today. Should be enough to tune the car and get it home afterward.

dmhenderson 07-02-2014 01:49 PM

Fun with E85 conversions:

The problem comes in when you get enough load on the fuel system the volume drops enough to let the regulator take over and hold pressure at 50 psi. The 20psi fuel pressure drop off is tough to tune a fuel map around. Its kind of like hitting a moving target. You chase your tail around, one minute its rich next its lean with no user input. I need to figure out what I need to do to get the pressure stabilized at 50 psi.

We also were getting air fuel ratios that would shift from one pull to the next. I have a G37 with stage 2 kit at the shop doing similar things with erratic a/f ratios and we found the bypass valve sticking. We have not performed the repair to confirm yet but I did verify the valve was not fully shutting at times causing large boost leak.
unfortunately yours is not so easy to get to to check in its current location behind bumper. I may need to check this if stabilizing the fuel pressure does not solve the erratic a/f ratios.

The saga continues. Wu-tang.

Hey mate, theDreamer sent me here haha.

just installed the Stillen kit myself and had it tuned on Monday, I'll be watching your thread closely as I was wanting to pull the trigger sometime on E85 as well :)

all the best hope it all works out well!

Word of advice on the E85 thing:

Don't.

So quick update:
-Synapse Engineering (owned by Porsche lol) BPV being welded on today.
After a meeting of the minds between Frank, the guys at CJ Motorsports and the guys at Z1 Motorsports, they determined the entire factory fuel system had to go.

-CJ Motorsports stage 1 fuel return system being installed tomorrow.

-Afterwards, we all collectively hold our breath when it goes on the dyno.

Here's a bonus shot of the (semi functional) car in question this past weekend at Hill's charity show:

dmhenderson 08-01-2014 01:52 PM

Update on the valve. The correct P# is DV001A.006

theDreamer 08-01-2014 01:55 PM

So any final word on why the need to go full return system? Seems like the TT guys are able to bump power with just a larger fuel pump & injectors (with e85) and be fine, curious why the SC is not liking it.

dmhenderson 08-01-2014 02:01 PM

I am running 1000cc injectors instead of 600-800cc which may be the issue. No other explanation for the fuel pressure being so high.

dmhenderson 08-06-2014 07:45 AM

Some clarification and a non-update:

-The reason my fuel pressure is so high is because I'm trying to tune 93 octane on 1000cc injectors/340lph fuel pump. If I were to *only* run E85, I'd be fine but since I'm insisting on a backup pump gas tune (because knowing me, I will run out of gas at some point), we're having to install the return system.

-Hill's called yesterday and let me know that they now have the Synapse BPV with the correct bung. Assuming it'll be off to the welder today and on the dyno tomorrow/Fri.
(Isn't this fun???)

dmhenderson 08-15-2014 07:44 AM

Painfully slow status update:

Got word yesterday that the new fuel system is in, the new BPV has been welded on and the car is almost dyno-ready.

Could the end be in sight? So much like Charlie Brown, I'm going to get excited to run and kick the football again...

then GTM pulls the football away and laughs? lol

dmhenderson 08-15-2014 11:34 AM

Nah, not GTM anymore. I haven't spoken to anyone there in over a year.

Someone remind me again why I didn't/don't need upgraded MAF sensors?

There was a very good reason but I can't remember what it was. Driving me crazy.

Home stretch!

Quote:

Frank (Hill's Garage): I almost have the fuel mapping finished up to my liking. Just need to double check the low and mid range ignition timing for optimization. It's been kind of tough with these big injectors. We have such a lower pulse width on the injector under normal driving conditions now it really shifts a lot of things on our Maps that have a base fuel schedule axis for load reference.

Voice59 08-24-2014 07:07 PM

My appointment is the 27th of October! Hopefully my tuning isn't as crazy as yours.

dmhenderson 08-24-2014 07:14 PM

I went a little nuts. The 1000cc injectors and the huge fuel pump made things...complicated. I want long-term reliability which is hard to come by on a non-built FI converted motor.

If you're doing the plug and play GTM kit, it'll be cake.

warpeacelove 08-24-2014 07:26 PM

What's the brand of 1000cc's you've and what is the duty cycle on those?

dmhenderson 08-24-2014 07:31 PM

Injector Dynamics 1000cc injectors. Duty cycle 92.5% - recovery time less than 1 milisecond.
(they are hot sh*t)

dmhenderson 08-26-2014 10:34 PM

Got the car back from Hill's. Pump gas tune is done and it was a bastard. Injectors, fuel pump and fuel return system are playing nice with the new map.

Going to take it back in a bit to finish the tune for the E85 conversion but she's home for now.

Congrats man! Can't wait to finally see it

niko86 08-27-2014 06:30 AM

your engine bay looks the part!

dmhenderson 08-27-2014 12:02 PM

To me it just looks crowded

m4a1mustang 08-27-2014 01:15 PM

Glad you have it back, man! :driving:

dmhenderson 08-29-2014 04:30 PM

Me too man. You have no idea..

Trip report so far:
-Throttle is more responsive. Zero hesitation.

-Weird "slipping" feeling in the high end of the power band is gone. What I thought was the clutch was actually the BOV flopping open which explains the sudden weird power loss.

-Exhaust note sounds a bit deeper and not very Z like although that could just be my imagination since I haven't been around it in a while.

-Seems a bit more aggressive through the mid-range of the power band (high 3rd/low 4th).

-The car chews through gas at a hilarious pace. I think I've gone 80 miles (maybe) since I filled up and the tank is almost half empty.

-As previously mentioned, valve flutter is gone! Sounds a lot more like a factory FI car than a conversion. Lots of hiss, less background noise. Highly recommend this BOV to anyone with the same kit. The turbosmart valve was noisy, unreliable and required maintenance. This Synapse Engineering BOV requires no maintenance, is quiet as hell and isn't super expensive either.

dmhenderson 08-29-2014 04:33 PM

Also, I bought a dashcam which I'm fiddling with as we speak so maybe I can get some audio/video of the new setup in action.

mikey1600 09-10-2014 10:46 PM

glad everything is working now! sucks about the trouble you were having.

any new figures to update us with if you have before and afters? I'm about ready to pull the trigger on an e85 conversion as well, running the stillen supercharger kit.

dmhenderson 09-11-2014 06:22 AM

Still waiting on the E85 tune. Will post numbers once Frank has time to do it.

dmhenderson 02-10-2015 02:02 PM

This will likely be my last update:

-E85 conversion complete. Pushing a shade under 530 whp and 400wtq. Hilariously, premium is now cheaper per-gallon than E85. I can run both but have been running corn fuel just because it's fun.

-Clutch has given up entirely and just breaks loose under load at the top of the power band in 4th. Palpable dead spots in the clutch while accelerating in 2nd especially when cold.

-Curbed wheels refinished with gloss rather than satin. They sparkle like hell but look like giant "steal me" magnets. I actually had a guy chase me down yesterday flashing his brights and honking his horn (in a VW passat) asking where the wheels came from.

-Clutch replacement happening last week of March. Southbend Stage 3 Daily kit (apparently beefier than the super street) with replacement master cylinder, CSC etc. For the record, it's f'ed up that you have to replace the CMC automatically on a clutch with less than 15k miles on it but whatever. Joys of the VQ37 platform I guess. Price tag on that clutch kit is horrendous but I'm talking with Joe over at Zspeed to work something out once he gets back from vacation on Friday.

theDreamer 02-10-2015 02:36 PM

DM, you will like the stage 3 daily kit, I got it in mid Jan when my CSC died after 85,000 miles.
I still drive my Z everyday and after a couple days it feels like normal and grabs much better.

dmhenderson 02-20-2015 08:44 PM

Stage 3 daily with quiet disc option purchased. Will be on the car by the end of March.
Joe at Zspeed cut me a really solid deal. I'm having the clutch shipped to my house while it snows so I can play with it and make racecar noises.

Also joining you on the e85 front, my SC seized up and replacing parts currently, going to make the switch to e85 while the car is down.

dmhenderson 02-23-2015 03:27 PM

"seized up"??? What happened? You're going to make me paranoid.

Read what we had to do carefully and save yourself a headache. The ethanol conversion was horrible and probably not worth it in the long run.

Go ahead and pick up the fuel return kit from CJM now because the setup won't work without it. Just to give you an idea, I have to fill up twice a week driving around on this stuff, it's more expensive than premium (right now) and burns 3x as fast. Oh and I should also mention my "commute" is less than a quarter mile from home. I'm sure you know most of this - just want you to be aware of what you're getting yourself into.

Also did you ever swap out your BPV?

*Edit: For FI and Ethanol you need the stage 2 return kit FYI.

Haha hate to disappoint man, but the build is pretty much done. The clutch is the last upgrade i'm putting on the car before I part it out.
