April 27th NASA Hyper Drive

Just in case you see my PG 370Z covered in stickers crawling around Summit Point Main on the 27th, IT’S NOT ME DRIVING!

I am letting a friend drive my car in the NASA Hyper Drive. This will be his first time on track so I expect he will be very slow.

And say a prayer that he keeps everything on track…

I hope he is buying track insurance for the time that he is going to be out on the track there! If it is only one day, he should be able to get it for only $100 - 150. It is SOOOOOOOOO worth it if you need it. I have been going to track events for over six years now and still get insurance even though I've never had an incident. I had a close call in the novice group at VIR when an instructor doing a check ride in his race car was passing me on a non-passing turn and I had to hammer the brakes and take a more dangerous line through turn 10. Not a fun moment. I have a friend of mine that had to put over $40k into his 911 to get it back onto the track after backing into a tire wall at 70mph.

Not only do you have to worry about your friend's skills, other driver's skills but also the deer that are known to come out and total cars. YouTube has a 'Vette that gets slammed by one.

I have seen several deer there on the property, but not actually on the track itself.

Good luck!

ResIpsa 04-11-2013 09:40 AM

I am very aware of the risks. I am in the most advanced groups with NASA and F.A.T.T. and I am signed off for Seat Time.

And yes, I have seen many Deer at Summit Point.

Well, again, my lack of knowledge of the different MAZOC members (I've only attended two meets), appears to bite me. I did not question your skills. Just trying to help.

No problem. Your advice is still good nonetheless. :tiphat:

Thanks. I should have known that you track it based on the mods listed in your signature.

Have fun at the track.

And the one not covered in stickers will be me

How long are the HPDE events typically for each day? I know we have to be there by 7:30 AM. Not looking forward to that drive in the morning.....

I've been on a hyperdrive on the Jefferson circuit before, but this will be my first HPDE and first time on the Main Circuit.

Leave by about 5:30, would be my recommendation...

You'll likely go straight to a classroom session after the morning drivers meeting, and then hit the track for the first time around 10, with 4x 25 minute sessions. That's my guess for your "timeframe."

Bring a portable air pump and a tire gauge.

ResIpsa 04-12-2013 02:39 PM

You will have a mandatory meeting at 7:30 a.m. so plan to arrive earlier than that. You will actually have three 25 minute sessions on Saturday and Sunday.

Don’t worry about bringing an air pump as air is free and available directly opposite the gas pumps.

You will need to top off your gas before each session to avoid fuel starvation out of turn 1. And when I say top off I mean top off. I use a large funnel and a gas container and fill until gas overflows the fuel neck.

Trust me, even novice drivers get fuel starvation in 370's and it is frustrating. It also can spook your instructor. You are welcome to borrow my funnel (on Saturday at least). I usually park next to my buddy right across from the gas pumps.

I won't be driving at this event so feel free to find me in the paddock if you have any questions.

Have you made any brake upgrades?

b1adesofcha0s 04-12-2013 02:56 PM

Yeah I have taken care of the brakes (XP8's and Motul RBF600) and the oil cooler. I guess I should buy a gas container then. How big of a container will I need?

What time does the event usually end? Trying to figure out how much water/snacks to bring with me. Anything else I should bring with me?

Appreciate the advice guys

After 2 good sessions, it's wise to top up usually. In the rain, I can go an entire day :) lol

Ah, yes, you have an air pump on Main. I believe Shenandoah doesnt have one...

I regularly got fuel starvation my first weekend when I was anywhere around half-tank on a long right.

ResIpsa 04-12-2013 04:22 PM

If everything goes incident free you should be out of there by 4:00 p.m.

I suggest bringing a 5 gallon gas container that you fill on your way to the track to save money. The pumps at the track will only accept your credit card one or two times (auto fraud protection). However, just let your instructor know about the possibility of fuel starvation. If it happens it is not the end of the world.

My general rule is to never let myself feel thirsty or hungry. I drink Gatorade and eat constantly at a track day. Contrary to what my wife says, a track day is not the time to worry about your diet.

Otherwise, it sounds like your car is perfectly setup. I will see you there. Have a blast!

b1adesofcha0s 04-12-2013 08:45 PM

I can't just abandon my diet like that :p

I don't really eat that much, but I gotta make sure to bring plenty of water as I do get very thirsty. Do they provide lunch or do we just get it ourselves? Sorry for all the questions, I just want to make sure I'm 100% prepared.

Let's try to keep this thread about the Karting Challenge event guys. :ugh2:

Shush you! Do you not know how MAZOC threads work by now? :p

Besides it's valuable info for everyone here. If I can be done at 4 PM, then I might just go to dinner with you guys. Depends how tired I am by then.

So who all is going to meet up in FFX to Caravan over? I know I will.

RandyD 04-15-2013 09:41 AM

hm.. is there a caravan route - might be easier for me to meet up as you all come north.

ZCarMan 04-15-2013 11:57 AM

Some of the VA folks were going to meet at the FFX meet location and go up. I'm going to just make my way there on my own. I recommend folks plan to be there at least 45 mins before start time, as we have to all sign in and fill out their forms. There are like four or five computer stations that allow one person to fill out the registration and then pay their fee to drive. Then you have to get your head smock and helmet if you don't have one already.

m4a1mustang 04-15-2013 12:25 PM

10-4 we'll just drive straight up there too.

ZCarMan 04-21-2013 06:16 PM

A Sunday bump to keep everyone up to speed that we are now less than one week before the Karting challenge at Summit Point. Please plan to be at Summit Point no later than 11AM if possible so we can ensure everyone can get checked in, paid for and outfitted appropriately before out start time at noon. Right now as of Sunday the 21st we have 20 still committed to attending, so we are looking at $90.00 per person. I'll update as need be, but otherwise I look forward to seeing everyone on Saturday the 27th for a good couple of hours of karting fun.

chieuxuan 04-21-2013 06:25 PM

Cwix and Aniceh, are we meeting at Costco or just go there?? If we meet at Costco, we should leave there no more than 10:15, should we just meet at Costco at 10 sharp then roll??

Masa 04-21-2013 06:42 PM

Depending on if my friend rides with me or not (lives in Rockville) I may end up meeting with you guys at the Costco in Frederick as well.

b1adesofcha0s 04-21-2013 06:45 PM

Someone please give me a call/text before you guys head out for dinner. I may join you

eastwest2300 04-21-2013 06:49 PM
