Guys, in planning another fun loop I discovered that one of the roads (411) passes Clingman's Dome, which is a pretty interesting structure and is the highest point in Great Smokey Mountains National Park (6,643 feet). This is a pretty big tourist attraction so I am sure there will be some tourist traffic on this road, but I figured it would still be very nice to drive up here and check it out.

Clingmans Dome - Great Smoky Mountains National Park

To get to Clingman's Dome there is a 7 mile long road that branches off of 411 and leads to a parking lot. From there its a .5 mile hike (starting at about 6200ft and climbing to 6600ft). The trail is steep, but paved. On a clear day you can see for 100 miles.

Let me know if you guys would be interested in incorporating this into a driving loop. It would be about 155 miles of driving total and probably a couple hours at the Dome. If there is not enough interest I may just can the stop or do it myself. :)

So, back on topic, who is interested in mixing a short hike into one of our driving loops?

Red__Zed 04-24-2012 01:19 PM

I'm down to hike

Due to my peak physical condition, I'm down for this as long as 3-4 of you agree to carry me after I run out of breath... 10 feet from the car.

Hey everyone, I was talking to Patricia about Wednesday night dinner and lunch and such during the rest of the time at FVR for ZDayZ. As you know, the plan for Tuesday night after we arrive is to grill steaks and baked potato. We thought for dinner on Wednesday we would do pulled pork sandwiches as thats simple and inexpensive for everyone. Last year worked out well with everyone else chipping in and buying dogs/burgers/bread/buns/lunch meat/drinks/chips/charcoal, etc. whatever they wanted.

In the end we all saved lots of cash and had plenty of grub for everyone thus allowing more for gasoline and booze. So think about that as you plan for ZDayZ and when we make the stop just prior heading into FVR, we'll have the op to purchase our supplies.

I have a portable grill again this year and we'll use it to grill on. If anyone else wants to bring an extra you are welcome but I realize not everyone has the room.

I've got to start thinking of some fun/interesting stuff to bring. It may be food, it may be beer, heck I may even wear clothes this year.

Jon, we'll coordinate at the store when we get down there so I can help contribute some stuff to the cabin. I'll pick up some brew, food and other things to help out

m4a1mustang 04-25-2012 08:33 AM

Yes I'll be buying a lot of goods as well. IIRC the fridge at the cabin was pretty big.
