All the gear All the time.

This was your free one. The next one will likely end up with medical bills. You need to be smarter on a bike. The penalty for a mistake is often death.
What he said. You can actually ride in the wet and at a quick pace, but you shouldn't. Learn your bike like the back of your hand in the dry. Get a feel for how it moves and reacts. Try to avoid rain and wet roads until you get more experience. Take a dirt bike class. A lot of those skills will make you a better street rider.

Your form will be completely different between MX and street. Go take a superbike class at the track not to go faster, but to learn the fundamental skills of controlling a motorcycle.

Keep the rubber side down!

You can still learn about braking/throttle control, being comfortable when the bike is getting squirrely, etc. Plus, the dirt bikes don't smash into a million pieces when you drop them and it's fun. And yes a superbike class is another great option. Glad he's okay!!!

+1 for a track day/superbike class. I BY FAR learned more from 1 track day than I did during my licensing class

Glad to hear that you are ok and just your pride got bruised.

Something no one has mentioned yet but it your helmet hit the ground, throw it away and get a new one. Even dropping it will degrade the integrity of it and the last thing you want to gamble on it your head.

Also, the worst time to ride is right when it starts raining and right after it quits. All the oil and **** in the blacktop just settles on the top and creates for an ice rink.
