Offer a dinner for steaks or something at your place while they are in town maybe? To be honest they are already giving you an out in saying its a Birthday present. *I* would think they really want to spend some time with you and care about you.

Some "friends" I wouldn't accept because I'm pretty sure they would try to hang it over me even though it was their offer.

Also, the friends I would accept from can afford the cost with no hassles. If it were a close friend and I knew they were not in the best financial situation (in which case, why the hell are they offering), I would not accept simply for that.
They're pretty much my best friends - we all hang out almost every night of the week anymore and they'd never be ones to hang it over my head, I don't think.

I would think it wouldn't be a big deal (money-wise) for them with the way he spends on his GTR, but I don't like to ever think that way about anyone - I will always feel like I'm indebted to them, even if it's a gift. I guess that's just how I am.

I am going out on a limb here with this but if you guys are that close, **** the $, you guys are so past that BS. I don't care if they drive a ford pinto or a GTR, you all (**** typing y'all haha) have a good relationship and if they offer, go for it, they are your close friends and that obviously means a lot to them already. You obviously are about their feelings...

I have a good friend that makes bank and has almost no expenses because he travels for work all the time. Years ago, I was a lot more uncomfortable about letting him spend money on us. Now I just ask for his credit card to pay the tab

Basically, I know that he enjoys doing what he's doing. I know that I would be doing the same thing in his position. I enjoy spending money on my friends and family

I wish I could afford to spend more money on friends.

I try to, but I'm also a horrible gift giver.

Hey man, its not always what you can give back in $. Friendship, willingness to offer support through verbal or other channels can make a big impact. Money is NOT always the best heart felt response. When you care about people, its in your actions that count. $ is not the best indicator of your caring!

You're correct.

I guess I am just looking at things materialistically when I shouldn't be, thanks.
