Steely Dan is one of my favorite groups but I'm beginning to understand why they didn't perform live a lot. Maybe it's just crappy recording/copying but I've only seen one live SD video in the thread that I really enjoyed (Black Friday). Interesting to see what they did live but they shoulda stayed in the studio.

I'm not trying to discourage anyone from posting live SD (heck, I've even seen a few Rap and Dubstep songs I didn't hate), I just felt like spouting a little.

I'd say they're hit & miss 'live'. I saw them a few yrs back when they were performing albums in their entirety (I went to the 'Royal Scam' & 'Aja' nights)
@ the Gibson Amphitheater here in L.A. (a venue that is sadly gone now) and both nights they sounded great and were really into their performances.

I saw them last year @ the Nokia Theater and felt like they were just phoning it in. They didn't even do a single encore. That's right, finished the last song, said good night, and walked off stage. It was weird.

I haven't listened to Tommy in way too long. Brings back a lot of memories. Thanks.

I have at least three copies on vinyl and a quad 8-track set but can't remember if I have the CD. Will have to do some digging and see if I can find the CD in my collection. If I don't have it, gotta buy it.

heya, edgez...i know you dig the who from reading previous threads...one of my two all-time fave albums/combo is WHOS NEXT paired with SUPERTRAMP'S CRIME OF THE CENTURY...when i taped it, i had to add 'eminence front' and 'join together w/the band' to complete the most perfect and one of the most important lps of their's and the early 70's.

and, i've reordered some more SUPERTRAMP, and, specifically, their 9 minute plus jam of 'another man's woman'...COTC is a masterpiece...

hahaha...we seem to be connected a bit, my friend (old sac notwithstanding)...COC is one of the few albums that EYE was introduced to by another friend; very rare...but, it happened as i was showing my high school bud my brand new '75 superglide...and i hadn't seen him in a bit...it was basically indoor-to-outdoor muzak but it was sooo good: so powerful and potent
and impressionable, even overriding the harley event...the group basically locked themselves in a castle and created a mid-seventies masterpiece...thx, scotty, for turnin' me on (dead man)---not really...

two other rarities that i got turned onto in '72---a very poor recently married man wirkin' for $2.25 an hr. by the store mgr. after he knew my tastes...THE MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA (johnny mclaughlin/billy cobham) (very much heavy jazz fusion) and, the tender,
melodic, so soft hippie-romanticism (with top-grade COLUMBIA studio cats) poetry of JIMMIE SPHEERIS (rip, on his b-day, sadly)...

i hears it; i either loves or i don't...these, i do...

Didn't find the CD but I must have it somewhere as I found a stack of DVDRs labeled "Rips Of My CDs xx of yy" with the image files. Luckily, the albums were on the DVDs in alphabetical order so all I had to do was flip to the discs with the W's. Now I need to find some bell-bottoms and tie-dyed t-shirts.

I've really enjoyed hearing these old tunes again. I've never been a big fan of either group (a bit too "arty" for my taste ... but both have songs in my Top 1000 Rock Songs list) so I haven't Liked very many of them, but it's a nice trip down memory lane. Thanks and keep 'em comin', onzedge.

for STEELY fans i highly recommended walter's 11 STACKS 0' WAX...for me, the best overall music of the bunch...

any opinions?

Sounds like we have similar taste in music. At the least, there is a lot of overlap.

BTW, Tumbleweed Connection is one of my all-time favorite albums, artistically, but the production is some of the worst I've heard.
