Correct. You just use one hand to hold the shifter stem (make sure it doesnt twist) and with the other turn the knob loose with the strap wrench.

I actually used my knee to push back against the second wrench. I was then able to get both hands on the strap wrench and use a good amount of steady pressure to loosen the knob gradually.

mmm.... now I understand the reason behind the low rep-score of yours.... 1) not too many useful posts thus not many reps can be granted. 2) not too many friends or respect....

you see, that is where you are mistaken, on all accounts... respect =/= reputation as it is intended.. and that's ok, enjoy your reps. it's no sweat off my back.. I don't live and die on the internets :bowrofl::bowrofl::bowrofl:

I had my left shin on the passenger seat with my knee resting on the center console by the shifter. My right knee was on the passenger floorboard. It was not the most comfortable position, but it wasn't bad. I just needed two hands for the first couple of torques of the strap wrench.

eastwest2300 02-20-2013 01:54 PM

I got the shift knob in the morning while I was at work. I picked up a strap wrench on my way home for lunch and it took about 20 min. Removal took about 5 min. The rest was screwing on the new knob and unscrewing several times to get the pattern facing the correct way

mr.jar- how did you hold the shifter itself? did you have another pair of hands (wifey)?

I was prepared to use my sawall to get the damn thing out if I had to :icon17: Luckily, the proper tools and a little bit of elbow grease can go a long way. It wound up being a lot easier that I was expecting after reading all the horror stories on the forum.

mr.alcheng- my Z's knob was a royal pita to remove. broke two strap wrenches and i just said f- it and took my oil filter wrench and got the damn thing off. :D

i just didnt want to damage the shift linkage below, so I was definitely careful about that side of things.

I used my knee to prevent the second wrench from turning, which in turn kept the shifter itself from twisting. I actually twisted it a hair before I pulled out the second wrench :shakes head: but I got it fixed and back to normal

mr.zman- on my TWM knob, i did use a tad of loctite just enough for it from coming loose and let it dry over night. just a little dab of blue is all it takes. :)
