Just one of those cigar-etiquette things. The fuel in lighters (with the exception of butane) supposedly fuck up the taste.

They make long cedar matches just for this purpose. You're supposed to wait until the flame gets beyond the tip, so that you're only lighting with the flame on the wood portion. You also never put a cigar out, you let it extinguish itself.

I know the last part. I have never used a cedar match to light one, though. Always just a butane Zippo.
