Because of the schedule I worked (3-midnight), I was home for the kids during the day. The ex worked the overnight shift, so she took care of them when I wasn't home. It was a trade-off. When we both worked days, we took turns taking vacation/sick time to take care of the kids, though usually it was me that wound up using all my vacation/sick time every year. 
I've taken days off when I had no PTO, yeah it made life tough on short paychecks, but it was all about what we considered important. Probably the reason I got divorced...
