Yup. Hope he wakes up and quits driving under the influence.
I have a friend who was charged with murder after driving under the influence and crashing his Lotus.

If you drink, don't drive. PLEASE.

Hasn't been decided yet.
He was at a pub watching a basketball game and when leaving, the guy complimented him on his car. He asked him if he wanted to take a ride. Crash followed.
The bar was no more than two miles from his house and the wreck was between there and the bar.
Absolutely broke my heart. He is not a young impetuous kid either. Almost my age (50). Made one bad decision and now has to live with the fact that he caused another man's death as well as the possibility for a very long prison sentence.

I can't see how someone can rationalize driving to a bar to have drinks with the full intention of driving home. For me, if I plan on going to a bar at all, I don't plan on driving home.

OP, your friend's insurance rates are going to go through the roof. I can't say I feel sorry for him though . . .

He's probably going to be responsible for all of the property damage. The rental cars insurance will pay for the car more than likely, but they will def sue your friend for repayment. They say in TN, a DUI will cost you $10k in just fines and other related charges. But then he will face the 3 years of astronomical auto insurance rates.

I hope he "your friend" has a hefty amount of cash stashed somewhere. With that I mean over 20,000 Dolores. (20 k) (I know Dolores not dollars)
DUI will cost close to 10 thousand, between fines, lawyer fees, court fees and so on. Then he will be paying for a long time with a special form called SR-22. From now on, any insurance company will request his SR22 and that automatically will place him as a HIGH RISK driver. So even if he skips jail and pays all the fines, his insurance will take care of the rest.
And I have no clue how is he going to pay for the rental vehicle.
He should be glad he impacted a vehicle and not a human being.
Word of advice, tell your friend not to drive for the next 5 years because insurance alone is going to hurt his pocket the most.

I'm with you on that one. I normally don't drink when I'm out of my house. But if I do, is because my wife is with me and she can drive me home or I just don't go out drinking.
I don't even go out with buddies to drink because I have seen it time after time where the DD is the one that ends up more drunk than the ones that were supposed to drink.

It might be his first DWI but you know what they say about it. You are more likely to drive drunk more than 50 times before you get pulled over. So I guess this was his 51st time.
I know of someone in Texas that is serving life in prison because that person had more than 12 DWI's, yes more than twelve. Finally the judge had enough from this person and sentenced him to life. It might look a bit harsh but he had too many chances to rehab and change his live.

if he had the optional insurance on the rental, they might cover it, might not. depends on the fine print. He may be out for the complete loss of the rental, in addition to all the other damages and fines. He's pretty screwed.

why would he drive a rental out to a pub to drink? Thats just crazy. I might have done similar things when I was younger, but at our age (50), I would never do that.

Have you taken a taxi cab lately? Especially if living in NYC
I guess a rental car is cheaper than a taxi in some areas

Thank you all for the sharing. My friend is just a fu**ing idiot. This stupid used to drive under influence very often because he thought he would never get caught. And I totally don't get why the f*ck this idiot rented out a car to go out for drinking. Well, I know you are my friend but you are screwed. Lucky that he didn't kill somebody. smfh...

So I knew it. Just like the saying "you are more likely to drive drunk 50 times or more before you get pulled over".
Why he rented a car? because is cheaper than a cab. You can rent a vehicle for the entire weekend for less than $30.00. Now, see if a cab driver will take you everywhere during the weekend for $30.00 or less.

Never ending story with this Shiitt, no matter how many commercials, ads, police on the streets, wrecked cars on display to detur you from drinking and driving............ Some idiot always chooses to do the **** anyway. I don't drink and have Zero Tolerance with those who commit these crimes. I knew a guy who did this and killed a mother of 4, great guy, never did much of anything wrong in his life other than this and served 9 years in prison.............. And IMO, IT STILL WASNT ENOUGH!!! I have a wife and kids too and mourn for that victims family and can't imagine the pain they went through. Tell your friend he dogged a bullet and be responsible if he's gonna continue to drink.
