Default Test Pipes + Tune = Pass Inspection (Texas)

So I've had my lightly modded (K&N Typhoon, ARK test pipes & tune) Nismo for 2 years now and had to get my first state inspection. I had been told I would pass as long as I had a tune, but now I know for sure. :-)

I hope this helps some of you who are on the fence about getting test pipes.

Preface this with: this only works in TX, because TX's inspection is a joke and is highly dependent on where you go to get it tested

I did, I put Texas in the thread title. Each state does their own style of inspection.

The tune doesn't matter. While idling or driving, a car will ALWAYS run 14.7 AFR. That's because it's in closed loop throttle. Only under WOT in open loop will you see AFR changes. What this actually means is if they did a sniffer test the car doesn't pollute over their EPA limits while at idle or while driving. Now if they didn't do a sniffer test then like ohio all they did was test the gas cap and check for check engine lights since check engine lights make cars run richer to protect then engine from damage. Richer obviously means lower than 14.7 AFR which is polluting more. Now if you had a huge fire breathing v8 and went catless and that engine was still idling at 14.7, it could fail since its feeding more cylinders and using more gas to idle therefore it could be over the EPA limits. Still don't know if you got sniffed but if you did its good to know a 3.7 v6 doesn't use that much gas in closed loop.

In Texas they plug into your OBD-II port and look for check engine lights and fault codes; they don't do a sniffer test. If you don't turn off the rear 02 sensors (which as far as I know can only be done via a tune), you will eventually get a CEL when running test pipes.

So if you leave the rears off you'll fail, The ODB will be talking to your ECU and see those are in a "not ready" status. Guys here in MA( Which a Biach to get a sticker) have failed for shutting O2's off. Mostly the subi and EVO guys but :/

I guess Texas doesn't look for that because mine are turned off and I passed.

It depends where you go in tx because where I'm from (central tx) they don't even plug on obd2 readers and the inspection is only 14 dollars one time I did my inspection in Fort Worth and the charge me 34 and they put It on a dyno and everything and that was at a Jeffy lube

When i had my srt-4 I had strait pipe and catless downpipe and I always pass ...where I'm from the don't do emissions ...

You are correct but if you're not tripping a code at the time you'll have no code. I go months and months without tripping a code.

This isn't correct in why they fail. You're not shutting the rear o2 off, you're just shutting the cel off from turning on. I tune subis and no ones ever had an issue. If subis you know are failing something else is up.

I passed MA inspection this saturday w/ ARTs and Uprev. All my monitors were in "ready state". I didn't turn off O2's or catalyst monitors. I do get p0420 if I drive it hard from "cat inefficiency" from time to time, but that goes away and doesn't cause any high idling.
