Need help with car jacks

I am going to be installing the exhaust system I picked up from Cyerkes yesterday on my own. I'm looking for a floor jack and 4 jack stands that will

Default Need help with car jacks

I am going to be installing the exhaust system I picked up from Cyerkes yesterday on my own.

I'm looking for a floor jack and 4 jack stands that will reliably hold my Z without dropping it on my head. I've been reading the forums for hours trying to find pictures of the 'hockey pucks' people are using in combination with their jack stands and don't understand exactly how they are being used.

The Z has circular-female jackpoints. All the jack stands I have found appear to have a 'U' shape where they would connect to the car. Are you guys cutting holes into the hockey pucks and placing them over 'U' of the jack stands to form the proper circular-male point needed to fit the Z's jack point?
Is there a cheap set of jacks I can get that don't require the use of hockey pucks?

Can someone help me understand exactly what I should be purchasing so I dont kill myself?

Curious about this as well. I need to pick up a floor jack and some jack stands for my exhaust install. And like Black, I would prefer not dropping the car on myself, even though it is light.

I think they are using the hockey puck with a groove machined into it to jack the car up using the frame's pinch weld jack point. I ended up just jacking mine up underneath the differential housing and placing the jack stands underneath where the rear subframe mounts to the chassis. It was plenty sturdy when I swapped my exhaust.

just use common sense when jacking up the car and putting the stands on. jack up the rear using the rear differential, and use your judgement as to where you can safely put the jack stands. i tend to use the same rear sub-frame meets as well, but you have to jack the car higher to use these points

I lift one side at a time (at the pinch weld, behind the front tire) to place the car on jack stands. There are other points, such as the rear diff. I have one puck with a groove cut through the center (1/4 inch cut made with a hack saw) to use with a floor jack on the pinch weld to lift the car. Depending on the jack stands you have, you may or may not need hockey pucks (no need to cut) for them. Find any place adjacent to the pinch weld that's part of the frame (metal of course, and towards the inside of the pinch weld) and that'll be a safe place for your jack stands.

Just an update. I have the exhaust installed now. It sounds SICK! I'm amazed at how video does not capture the immense sound quality of the exhaust from the smooth roar on the way up to the little warble it spits out on the way down. I'm in love!

It's the AAM 2.5" catback exhaust. I just can't get enough of the way it sounds! I couldn't even sleep last night; I was actually hoping the sun would come up just so I could enjoy the drive to work. I need someone who can drive a stick to drive it past me so I can hear what it sounds like from the outside.

For future reference for other users who don't own stands or a lift. i just removed the OEM and installed an ARK utilizing the following.

1)Reverse car onto 10" ramps, put parking break on
2) place jack (with hockey puck on it)under driver side suspension plate (silver steel plate next to rear wheel)
3) jack up side enough to fit two planks of wood under the tire. (total height = 4")
4) lower jack so car rests on wood
5) repeat for passenger side

Just to clarify, you rolled the back wheels up on the 10 inch ramp and then elevated the front wheels on a couple of 2x4's? It is necessary to raise the front if you're just bolting on a cat back system?

And congrats on the new exhaust OP

I installed both a y-pipe and catback system on mine by raising the rear only, plenty of room.

Nope. I rolled the car backwards onto the ramps, than lifted the rear off the ramps so i could slide wood between the ramps and the wheel. the wood was the same shape as the flat spot of the ramp. Did this on the driver side, then the passenger side.
