straight-piping?

pros and cons? would it be stupid of me to do aside from the major risk of getting pulled over?

pro
-you'll probably gain a legitimate amount of power
-it's cheap

cons
-it's STUPID LOUD
-it stinks, I drove behind a G35 with test pipe last night and I could literarily smell his car from like 5 car lenghts away. IT'S NOT COOL!
-it's loud, but not in a good way

conclusion: it's NOT worth it

Yup, I can't stand them. On my G35, I had the HKS exhaust with high flow cats. It sounded awesome, but I wanted to see what the fuss was all about with switching to test pipes. I gained 1whp at the peak of the rpms and gained the horrible unburnt gas smell. Less than 4 months later, I sold them and went back to high flow cats.

The other issue with a full straight pipe on these cars is that you may gain some power, but you could end up losing torque which these cars desperately need. I echo everyone above, it is not worth it on any level.

I think I'm the only one on here that has actually done it. I haven't dynoed since and I badly need a tune since I am running very rich. It is very loud (see my other thread) especially with F.I. LTH's which I paired it with. I did it as an experiment and welded 2.5" dual piping to the stock muffler. I'll probably switch to a manufacturer cbe down the line but for some of us, being the loudest car just does it.

However, you won't lose backpressure unless your tubing diameter is greater than 2.5". That would be the max on N/A applications, if you look at the GTM and AAM catbacks they are both true duals that run individual cans and are 2.5" as is F.I.

If you want to hear how loud it is I posted a vid today.

Btw, the power increases are noticeable but I won't have results until I get a tune, which won't be for awhile. My daily commute has become really long so I take my DD a lot and leave the Z at home.

check my other thread, but I wouldn't recommend it for a second in Cali, you wouldn't make it a block. What started as an LTH install at my friend's exhaust shop led to us ******* around and bending pipes. Thats what happens when gearheads+tools+way too much time.
