A few dumb questions

hey everyone, I know these might seem like dumb questions but I am not sure of the answers.
1) Are x-straight pipes legal in all states?
2) what do high flow cats do?

Well...

1) Not really. Many states have noise and decibel regulations. Straight pipes are loud and often exceed those limits.

2) High flow CATS are exactly what they sound like...Catylitic converters that are designed to flow a bit better than typical stock installations..

There is almost nothing you can do to a car that is "legal in all states" this side of an air-freshener. No...touching the cats or any part of the exhaust is not legal.

1. An aftermarket Xpipe or Ypipe is legal. I'm sure you can find a rule saying that these are illegal in some form or another, but for all intents and purposes they will be 100% legal.
2. They are much higher flowing replacements to the restrictive OEM cats. They are an EASY 10-20rwhp gain depending on the type of dyno you use. I haven't seen anyone make less than 10hp to the tire, even on the smaller VQ35HR motor.

Too bad they're not legal here in California! What's the point of saving the environment if you can't enjoy it?

I hear ya buddy.

The most I'll probably end up modding to my engine or already have done will be: intake and exhaust. Maybe pulleys.

Aside from that now I'm concentrating on my suspension.

Same here--I'm going to Fast Intentions on Friday to have an exhaust and a Stillen 3 put on. Woohoo!

As we dont have carbon laws here in South Africa we are able to decat our cars and not have to worry about passing tests.
I was quoted to remove all OEM cats (1 in downpipe and two on exhaust i think)??
What affect do you think this will have in terms of power and noise???

There is 1 cat in each downpipe (aka the cat). There are no cats in the exhaust, just 2 resonators and the muffler.

in your case, just removing the catalytics with stock exhaust may help, and stay legal. For the cross pipes, you should probably get a tried and tested catback exhaust, then decide if you want to get rid of the front cats for louder/more powerful results.

I would say to get rid of part of the exhaust that has the most restriction or by following the Tuner threads to see which replacement part has the greatest gains and allowable for your budget and preference. And then deterimine whether or not your life/driving style will appreciate the "sound" as some will find it "awesome" and others "bothersome".

Im getting the FI Catback and Hi-Flow due to it power increase and will expect it to be louder,.
