Nothing really wrong with the canned tune from GTM. Lots of people are running it. With the UpRev logging tools you can monitor everything to make sure things are operating

The canned tune is fine, just super conservative. You're right about too much fuel and not much timing causing the backfiring issues, but this is a safety net Sam has to do since each car is different. Some cars like more fuel than others, some like less. Same with timing, ect.
A custom tune will net more power and torque, clean up the driveability, air/fuel and help your MPGs. It will feel like a totally different car, if it's tuned by someone competent with UpRev.
