Damn man! Never a dull moment. How are your oil levels? Have you been driving it, and if so, how much had you before it started knocking?

cdoxp800 11-05-2012 07:50 AM

Man that sucks...Sorry there here

red6spd 11-05-2012 07:55 AM

Does not really sound like a knock, more of a tick... IDK? Good luck man.

blackonorange 11-05-2012 10:05 AM

Check your oil!!!!!

rAiN 11-05-2012 10:18 AM

that dosnt sounds like knocking at all.
or maybe it is but when i had knocking with my civic long time ago, it was more of a thud-knock sound

weiboy718 11-05-2012 10:51 AM

Damn! That does sucks big time! Sorry to hear and it does sounds pretty loud.

Mkai0 11-05-2012 11:08 AM

It does sound a little loud..Pop your hood and take another video from the top of the engine bay.

Nixlimited 11-05-2012 12:04 PM

I am fairly positive that is not knocking. Sounds like valve train noise. Knocking typically happens under load and is less of a tick-tick-tick sort of noise. That sounds too rhythmic to be knocking.

elperuano 11-05-2012 12:53 PM

Sorry to hear that, whatever it may be, doesn't sound good at all.

Mitco39 11-05-2012 12:55 PM

Just so I am on the same page as everyone. Knocking on these engines typically means a bent rod right?

elperuano 11-05-2012 12:56 PM

^yes, means its doomed if there's knock.

binary0x01 11-05-2012 12:59 PM

That sucks man. Nightmare...

ANMVQ 11-05-2012 01:22 PM

O first to answer everyone at once. Oil level is full, had it changed last week . I can not hear it from the top of the motor only down behind the passenger tire. i like some off the replies its not knock. But if it was the timing chain should I hear it up top also?. And yes the noise is there at idle but will get louder driving.

Dembflyr 11-05-2012 01:35 PM

Maybe an exhaust leak. Have you removed the O2 sensors? Or have you had the headers out? It doesn't sound like a knock to me either but it's tough to tell on video.

Now is not the time for you to worry about that. :bowrofl:

elperuano 11-05-2012 02:41 PM

Doesn't it lean more towards knock if it gets louder while under load or driving? But knock u should be able to hear from the top correct?

No man. Never had the manifolds or O2'S out at anytime.

No, not at all. It means there is pre-detonation of the intake charge i.e. before the spark plug fires. The "knock" is the shockwave that go back through the engine.

Right, but people seem to refer to a knock of this type to be a sign of a bent rod. Surly this engine is not detonating at idle.

Zoren 370 11-05-2012 04:11 PM

Sounds like more on the valve's has anyone adjusted the gaps of your valves?
Or it could also one of the rocker arms is loose.
Doesn't sound like a knock

.. i hate to say it, but that is prolly knock...

lifter tick usually quiets down as rpm (and oil pressure) rises

ANMVQ 11-05-2012 04:28 PM

Hey no one has had part of the top of the motor apart . if the valves where ticking I would hear it on top also. top of the motor is no noise at all just on the bottom.

Boosted Performance 11-05-2012 04:42 PM

To me that sounds like rod/bearing knock. I had an engine tha spun a bearing due to oil starvation (not a VQ) and it sounded just like that. It is a mechanical issue for sure.

Z eliminator 11-05-2012 05:03 PM

mine did the same thing it sounded like a hammer hitting the back right side of the intake cover.
It was a cracked flex plate.
this happens when the torque converter comes loose.
the wheel is full of spider cracks .
mine was junk.
got lucly and they replaced it under warrenty.
go back to the guy who installed your engine and ahve him inspect your flex plate,
remove the bolt cover where the torque converter is ..

weiboy718 11-05-2012 05:07 PM

Yikes!

Now it is that time for you to take out your note that you had your dealer wrote saying they'll cover your warranty even with the supercharger.

Good luck!

Z eliminator 11-05-2012 05:38 PM

who removed the engine for a rebuild ?

No one ? Motor and trans have never been out of the car.
Weiboy that paper is on my table and it is the Infiniti system. when I went to get the TB. codes fixed they told me it was in my history notes. So we'll see .

Even more reason to lean towards knock if the motor was never touched. Could be from trying to make it all work and probably the countless dyno runs trying to tune that lead to this. Hope for t

Mr&Mrs 11-06-2012 10:19 AM

Im sorry man! I do not know what else to say...keep us posted.

Jordo! 11-06-2012 02:47 PM

That sounds like a valve tap to me.

Spun rod bearings usually have a more hollow "tok tok tok" sound to them.

Could be mechanical (tight valve/bent valve/valves need adjusting -- which I don't think you can do on this head) or possibly related to a wonky VVEL sensor/controller.

Low oil levels could cause that too... but then where did the oil go?

Only other thing I can think of is what Steve was saying about the flex plate.

I'd get a leak down test and see what's up -- good luck!

Thanx Jordo ,Car is going in tomorrow. I had a leak down test about 10 days ago. was perfect along with a compression test. so wee see what up tomorrow.

I won't be removing the S/C, because I am missing lot's of my oem parts plus it probably isn't worth it sending it back to GTM

Glad to hear you will still be around. I know what you mean about removing the SC. It could be very expensive to put it back to oem if you don't have all of the parts. I'm sure you will find someone that will be more than happy to take the car off your hands the way it is. Good luck with the sale.

Haha, this is weird!

I think the mods are deleting my posts for cluttering up Mike's thread

ANMVQ 11-07-2012 09:28 AM

Well just dropped it off, an do not feel to good about the outcome, Service manager kinda gave me a hard time, ( New guy). All in all if they do not warraty it I can not fix the car, 0 funds( Yet a lone the 9k is cost to fix if its rod knock) .. Has to do with the long story, But seems like this may be the end. of my car, If they do not cover it I will be parting it out, and seeing what else I can do to get rid of the car.. Just a gut feeling.. I really hope I'm wrong, Yes I know I can call Infiniti affairs, But we'll see what the dealer says. Honestly they way my luck with this car and other things I WONT be surprised at all if the whole thing is denined. :(

fuct 11-07-2012 09:47 AM

then what was the point of the signed warranty paper work junk?

They sure are deleting posts. We aren't cluttering up Mike's thread, we are just sharing his pain because we know how much hard work, money, and tears goes into making these cars supercharged and turboed beasts. We are staying on topic, just indirectly:tiphat: From what I have seen posts that sometimes contribute seemed to get deleted here..hmm

weiboy718 11-07-2012 10:10 AM

Mike, you probably have a legal case against them with that sign paper.

Sorry man! I knew the dealer are sketchy like that already.

ANMVQ 11-07-2012 11:09 AM

Thanx Weiboy and your are not cluttering LOL. Nothing has been determined yet was just a feeling I have. everything for my the last few months has been sh*t. I would think I have a case because I was told by the dealer" you buy from us ,we install it and you will stop have all your factor warranties". So we will see.
