Flwheel for boosted setup

So I'm about to order a flywheel for my BP kit and I'm on the fence as to which one I should get. I don't care about chatter or anything,

Default Flwheel for boosted setup

So I'm about to order a flywheel for my BP kit and I'm on the fence as to which one I should get. I don't care about chatter or anything, and I don't want something that weighs 15lbs or more. I see that Clutchmasters has one that weighs 13lbs, Specialty Z has one that is 13lbs also but I believe they are only compatible with their clutches if I remember right, and South bend also has a 14.5lb one also. I was thinking about getting the clutchmasters one but I'm not too sure how great they really are to be honest. Anyone that has experience and input with these flywheels or others that are in the same weight bracket that I may have missed would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I installed a Stillen flywheel with stock clutch and had about 8k miles on it before I broke everything down for a TT build. From what I remember it was the lightest I could find at the time around. I believe its bw 11-13lbs I cant remember specifically. Have absolutely nothing but good things to say about it in my opinion. It produces a slight chatter when you engage the clutch at a low rpm but you easily adjust your shifts and once you get fluent you wont notice much difference noise wise. I hope this helps answer your question at least partially. I plan on keeping this flywheel with a stage 3 clutch upgrade. Youll be very happy with the increase in response and rev speed from lightening up. Definitely brings a new element to the car. Hope it all goes smoothly

I remember reading a post by chuck that the clutchmasters was around the same price wise in comparison to the others you mentioned,but was par at best. I'm assuming that's the whole clutch assembly. Maybe just the flywheel would be ok? Sorry I can't be of more help.

I said the price is comparable. Spec is garbage. Do not buy anything from them. Hell, don't use a Spec even if it's free. Skip Specialty Z as well since they don't stand behind their products and just blame your mechanic if they send you defective products. Just call Joe at ZSpeed or Jon at Z1 and they'll get you what you need.

Do you already have a HD clutch setup? Just getting a flywheel and no clutch when going boost is a bad idea. The oem clutch will not b e able to hold the torque (2x + as much) and will slip. You will have to drop the transmission again.

Clutch is already taken care of trust me lol. I just need a flywheel that's light now. I don't want to jump on something unless I can get some feedback from some of you guys. Like I said, the chatter won't bother me. The car is going to be making a whole bunch of crazy noises anyways lol.

Im not a fan of Stillen at all, but I didn't even see a flywheel offered by them. I'll have to check again and see what theirs is all about. Basically clutchmasters is the lightest one I found at $500. Thanks for the help/advice so far

Looks like stillens is 14.25lbs and costs $375. How much I trust it? That I'm not sure

I had the same exact mentality at the time but it was the lightest I could find on the market 4 years ago when I first dropped the tranny in 2011. A lot has changed and progressed since then. At the same time it was made of top notch material and quality , same thing with their lightweight crank pulley. When I dropped the tranny the second time and did a visual inspection of the flywheel it looked just as new as the day I installed it. Even After 8k or more miles it didn't even look like the pressure plate had touched it, I drive my car sporty like any 370 owner would but I am not reckless and try to test the limits of the parts I have installed lol All in all I was pretty impressed with the changes and hope all goes well with your upgrades. Curious to see how much improvement you get.

So you haven't had the flywheel while boosted? The thing I'm concerned about also is the long term reliability of an aluminum fly that will get beaten on with 600hp... I'm personally not a fan of Stillen or their customer service. They are pretty cheap though. About $100 less than southbends fly and like $150 cheaper than clutchmasters.

At that kind of horse power,I would go with what's tried,tested and true. You've come this far,what's another hundred$ for added piece of mind. I'd really hate to see you come back on the forum posting that your clutch blew up on you.

I have no idea what's been tried and tested that's why I'm asking what others opinions are that have the same setups that I'm looking at. I don't care if the flywheel is $100 or $1000. I just want it to work

DO NOT GET THE SOUTHBEND ALM FLYWHEEL or any flywheel that has the below reluctor ring design. The steel one is OK and highly recommended but there is a major design flaw with the ALM fly. Look at al the reluctor rings on the flywheels you are looking at. Also a lot of these flywheels are all the same and manufactured by aasco, all these companies do not actually make their own flywheel. Here is the ring on the Southbend steel wheel see how thick it is? YOur not going to notice a few lbs on the FY after your boosted, go with a steel wheel.



Now look at the aluminum one, it could not take the heat and torque from boost and broke:

Joepro thanks very much for your advice, that's exactly what I wanted to hear. After talking to Joe and Zspeed and Sasha, they both confirmed that an aluminum fly would be awesome for an NA car, but not so much for a car that will be producing 600whp. Joe at Zspeed recommend the 18lb steel southbend one because it's made out of 4140 billet and will be able to dissipate the heat behind the clutch disk. So I'm almost 100% I'll end up getting that one. Thanks all for your advice/help. If anyone else has any other recommendations in regards to another steel light fly that they use with their boosted setup that would be similar to the southbend one, please talk to me lol.

I concur with Joe. In fact, I'm installing the exact same steel flywheel on my TT Z.
