Considering TT or SC...is it worth it?

guys i have modded a few cars over the years including a 350z with a turbo and i disagree with you guys about the car and necessary supporting balance mods.

A Z with a sport package is enough of a platform for a 380-420whp basic kit. There are plenty of cars out there with that amount of power that can stop or turn like a z. Its not enough power to blow up a rear on street tires and its well within the safety zone with a good tune. A basic setup with maybe some sway bars, clutch and fly wheel, and an oil cooler will be plenty of car and done right should be reliable. Now if your one of the cowboys that wanna go north of 500whp you have to be prepared for more

i dont get all the gtr comments, you can do a tt kit installed with everything i mentioned for 11-15k and a sc for 8-11, a gtr list for 92000 now so how is that on the same planet?!?!? unless your talking used and even still you are over 60k for a good low milage 09 or 10.

I haven't found one for under 60k that I would feel good purchasing. I have been in the market for one so that I can get the misses off my back about having a car that I can cart the kids around in AND is an automatic, so that she can drive it when her Tahoe goes in for "refreshing"...........

As far as cost, I went Greddy and spend "enough". So think a 34k NISMO + 20k (comparable GTM kits can be purchased and installed for a little less) comes out to 54k and that gets you a thrashed/abused GT-R. My NISMO had 6 miles on it when I got it............

because TT 370z (usual setting) will still be slower than a stock GTR.
even if Z goes faster than GTR on the straight line, what about other factors such as handling/tracking? reliability? and resale price?
If you account all those numerous factors, GTR may be a better buy, but not always true.
It's all about personal preference.

Stillen SC installed was $9200 at the Infiniti dealer. Retune will cost me $500.

It's not so much the price were talking about here, it's the warranty and reliability. From experience though, between buying the car, turbo kit, supporting mods, and labor I was up to $63,000 and that was with everything else stock other then the performance mods. Even if you have the sports package, tires and brakes should still be upgraded. I was making 450hp and traction was rough in first and second gear. Twice my rear brakes locked up slowing down from high speed. I blew out the bushings in my rear differential and my front suspension couldn't handle the power that well either. I went through a stage of misfires and check engine lights as well. My car eaisly needed another $10,000 to be reliable and efficient at that power level. After adding all that to the car maintenance cost are just shy of what they are on a GT-R other then the transmission service.

I bought my GT-R used for $65,000 with 10,000 miles on it and I'm so happy I did. I certainly lost money parting out my car and selling it stock but in the long run it works out so much better. The car drives absoloutely flawless and I get 24mpg on the highway as opposed to 16mpg with the Z. Having a warranty on the big items such as engine and drivetrain is nice too. Granted, my clutch master cylinder went bad during one of the intial test drives and we brought my car to Nissan with the turbo kit fully installed and no front bumper installed and got it replaced under warranty. Despite the issues I had, the Z was an absolute beast and I had a blast with it well it was good.

That is my experience with it and I'm not saying everyone's will be the same, but it is something that should be heavily considered.

Billy, you went whole-hog yet the guy right above you spent only $9200.

Personally, I would be going Stage 1, there is no need for me to be the fastest vehicle in my town.

Right, I was just sharing my experience. Everyone is different in what they want. I started off with a fully loaded Z which is unnecessary for the build but what I wanted. He also went with a supercharger which is cheaper in parts and labor. I was by no means trying to be the fastest car in town, rather have a car I truly enjoy. Even with the GT-R, I am by no means the fastest car in town. I bet 90% of the people who do a conservative setup of 400hp get bored and crank up the power eventually anyways.

Billy:

Great post(s). Thank you for sharing that with us. We did need a fresh perspective on things so that the OP would get experiences from different angles. The Stillen build should work out well, but will more than likely need a custom tune. Even when I put a PowerFC in my CA18DET S13 hatch, I had to specifically tune it to dial in a good tune. The learning feature is good, but needed to be taylored to my specific setup. That was true even with entering all of the values that correspond to installed comoponents. Just food for though.........

I am still going thru with my Greddy build, but at the same time, I am looking for a GT-R for "family purposes". That way my girl can get off my back about having driving a stick and putting a car seat in the back seat. A GT-R will fill that void, but I am not letting go of my Z.

That was a interesting read ! A little sobering and disappointing a 370z that cant handle 450hp .I was hoping to go FI down the road with something not too wild and everyday reliable is that possible ? Now I wonder ? Are those of us that want a FI doomed to sell and get something else ? seems to happen quite alot what do you guys think?

I don't think it is as extreme as it sounds, but I will comment after I get back and drive my Greddy kit around. And it is my DD!

I don't think it's that the z can't take the power. It can without a problem with good tires and clutch. I think most tt owers tt their car drive it for a yr or so and get bored with the power and it's and 10-20k jump from 500whp to anything else. So we tt owners dump the car.

There are many sides to the FI story. Here is mine.

I installed my TT kit in April. My car had 12k miles on it at the time.

I put down 474 hp and 396tq on a dynojet.

I get 18mpg mixed driving.

I drove it hard all summer with zero issues.

I have a 34 row oil cooler and never saw temps above 220 even on 98 degree days with hard driving.

I don't know what extra maintenance everyone keeps talking about with TT but the only thing that I do different is change the oil more often than I would normally.

When I put it away for the winter it had a little over 18k miles.

I would have no problem daily driving this car if I needed to. It starts and runs like stock until you get into the boost.

Don't get me wrong. I am not delusional. Whenever you take a NA car and add FI you are taking a big risk.

I did save a bunch by doing the install myself. I spent about $10k on the kit and supporting mods. I paid $32k for my car and I have about $1300 in other mods. So for less than $45k I have a fast, reliable and rare car.

Do I think it was worth it? HELL YES!
