I loved it for the time I had it. Ended up getting married, currently buying a home, and having to drop a chunk of change on all new furniture. So that's currently where our money is going. Probably be a couple of years before before you see me back in the scene. But I will be back. My wife supports my hobby so much and knows what it means to me. She's trying to get me to buy one now. But due to all the spending that's happing now I couldn't do all I want to my new ride off the bat. And that's the only I'll have it this time around. I just can't drive a stock Z (lol).

I don't have an oil pan spacer, so I'm still running the stock amount of oil. I'm hoping not to have oil temp issues, but GA summers are 90+ degrees and high humidity. Stop and go traffic in ATL doesn't lend itself to much airflow, either. *haha* We shall see.

What's up with the getting married and doing the fiscally responsible stuffs? :shakes head: ;) Really, congratulations on the nuptials and trust me, this game will be here when you are ready.

That is sweet love-making music. Car pron at its finest.

Thanks Sam.

So how much was the total cost man. This has convinced me that I am doing it to my Z34. Congrats on a beauti!!!

Vegitto-kun 05-08-2010 04:53 AM

If I win the lottery I will do it where this would be a track only car since I cant drive it on public roads so I will have to buy a second Z XD.

Back on USA soil so able to fully appreciate the videos.
Storm crow, I was just able to take in how sick that ride is, it really does look so nicely done.

GTM ref post #54, any input, I am interested.

Awesome car!:yum: I was thinking along the same lines for wheel color and headlights, thanks for sharing. I'd like so see some better (lighting) shots of the headlights when you get a chance.

Didn't read through all the posts but in reference to your diffuser "DirtyDave" did his in vinyl. Looks pretty good, I saw it in person at the Stillen Day too.

Thanks for the pics of the matte'd diffuser. As far as better pics go of the headlights, it's not going to get any better than the ones Sam took in the original post. Those are spot on as far as color goes in person. :)

Update

I receive a call from the transport driver yesterday afternoon stating he was one to one and a half hours out. Imagine my excitement to know that the car is almost home! The driver says he will call when he's on the street near where we have pre-arranged to meet.

The call comes and I tell him exactly where to go and that I will meet him in five minutes. I pull into the parking lot and he's pulling in at the exact same time. Timing perfection! We both exit our vehicles, exchange pleasantries and then get down to business. A quick hookup of the power from the rig to the trailer and then the hookup of the master control for the lift gate (this is an enclosed trailer with a drive on lift...super sweet) and I am wild with anticipation. The driver hits the "down" button and the gate opens about five inches...then stops. He looks over at me and says "It's just a fuse. I've been frying them for a while now. Let me go replace it." Fuse is replaced, "down" button is hit again and nothing. Zero. Nada. WTF? Driver fumbles around for about an hour and makes a few calls. Needless to say, I wasn't getting my car that night. I tell the driver to call me if things change but that I will not accept the car at night due to it being dark and I want to inspect it.

The call comes around 11pm that he has gotten it fixed. A wire was grounded to the metal of the trailer...shorting shiz out. Nice. So, we meet this morning before work around 8am. I have had a short ride into work in pretty much stop and go traffic. I did have opportunity to "get on it" a bit in a few short spots. My impressions so far: (keep in mind this is the spring pressure...I have not dialed up the boost controller)

1 - Comparing this to any other vehicle I have had to date is apples to oranges. The torque curve is a very linear in ramp up, nothing like the 350Z with GReddy, but so much more managable and pleasant. It hits hard and strong so it is not weaksauce like the supercharger kits I have owned, but doesn't cause major traction issues or obtrusive fish-tailing. What I really like is that it pulls the whole way through the powerband. Where my 350 would hit like a freight train and then take a nose dive, the 370 just pulls and pulls and pulls all the way to redline. Comparing it to the GT-R, it doesn't pull as hard down low, but I am attibuting that to the lower torque numbers and lack of AWD. Traction is still a small issue. Higher in the RPM band, it pulls harder than the GT-R.

2 - The exhaust is by far WAY too annoyingly loud. And it DRONES like mad at anything below 3000. Thumbs down for the GReddy TI-C TT with test pipes and resonators removed. I plan on replacing the resonators, if possible, to see if this will help alleviate some of the nasty rasp and drone. If not, then another exhaust is in my near future.

3 - Lifting the hood gave me wood. I mean, I had seen pictures, but crap the charge pipes look so stealthy and clean! Sam did an incredible job on the setup. The gauges are perfectly placed. The EVC 6, though hard to read due to the angle from the driver's seat, is beautifuly mounted in the slot in front of the cup holder where the dummy switch covers reside. (none of those switches are used in the Nismo) Nothing is damaged or out of sorts. Keep in mind that my car had less than a 1000 miles when it went to Sam. I had just broken 800, I believe. The car was brand new and still looks that very way! Not a scratch on any interior or exterior piece. That is no easy feat when basically disassembling the whole car.

As I drive the car more, I will give a better update and comparison. I need to "feel" her out a bit and see what all she has to offer. But, so far, the decisions I have made seem to be good. Many thanks to Sam and the hardworking guys at GTM for taking such good care of my car and putting together such a seamless build.

JB-370z 05-12-2010 09:14 AM

Awsome, can't wait to hear more and maybe if you are not like the rest of the turbo guys you could make some videos! Are the BOV's very loud? since you did not drive the Z much, the difference in power could be confusing???

SAM@GTM 05-12-2010 10:07 AM

Here is the video of the map switching in action, ECU has 5 different maps. by pressing down the set button and the cancel button on the st wheel you can switch ecu maps on the fly, map five is set on valet mode and so the car wont rev passed 2500rpm and won't go over 15 mph.

Sam

I will try and make some vids. What sucks is, I have no video equipment to do so. I bet Bullitt can help a brotha out, though. :) Right Mike??

The BOVs are fairly quiet. The exhaust drowns them out, even though they are bleeding under decel/shifting. I think this is due to their location. I'm sure they are quite loud outside of the car.

Not sure what you mean by your last question. Try and clarify and I will do my best to answer. :)

Very impressive work.

Hey Sam, I was wondering if these cars are still capable of passing the OBDII scanner for emission tests.

I know that Hondata provides a setting in their tuning program to turn on "OBDII Readiness" to pass emissions even with out the catalytic converters.

There are some sexy things going on under that hood.

Brazilbro 05-12-2010 05:40 PM

Is it the VVL that is limiting the tq. on our cars or what? I would think we could get closer the 400-425 wtq with close to 500whp. The GTM car (G37 I think) hit close to 500wtq with 10-11PSI. Is it the low PSI thast is limiting the TQ?

True ... raising the WHp will raise the torque at a given RPM:

Horsepower = (Torque*RPM) / 5252

But gearing has to be factored in. The HR/VHR may have a lower peak torque, but it will pull over a wider RPM range.

Trust me, 6-7 PSI will work fine for a daily driven HR/VHR. 10-11 PSI is on the high side for this motor ... you can always put in a boost controller for the rare occasions you run up against a "tough kill". ;)

Mike 05-12-2010 10:47 PM

Jeremy,
I would be willing to trade my invidia gemini exhaust, as I wouldn't mind super loud and annoying on mine. especially since its too low to clear the speed bumps at work now, and is truly a weekend track and mountain run only car now.

Color me a bit uneducated, but what is the diameter of the Invidia? What model do you have? And do you think it will drone less than the GReddy? I'm interested, but I need to make sure I quite this hooker down without restricting the flow of exhaust.

60 mm with 101mm rolled tips. muffler and tips are satin black, but I can always recoat to your gray metallic.

Invidia USA.

it should quiet and drone less, it definitely took the rasp away from my test pipes. Since Teresa won't drive the car anymore with the wing, I may as well also make it where she won't ride in it either!

Let me do a bit of research on how the change from 70mm to 60mm piping is going to affect the car. I think I should be ok, but certainly want to make sure. Sam is sending the resonators back for the rear cans and I may want to try popping those in, as well. Either way, I'm going to restrict the exhaust flow of the car.

LOL'ing at your comment re: Teresa. BTW, i'm telling her what you said! :tup:

JB-370z 05-14-2010 08:31 AM

Drone in the exhaust is due to the engine driving the exhaust system at its resonant frequency. You can't get rid of it, any length of pipe has a natural frequency, but you can change the frequency (RPM) it happens at. Stock exhaust systems are tuned to put the resonant frequencies outside the normal RPM range the engine is run in. Sometimes they add resonators for this purpose. To raise the resonant frequency of a system, shorten its length. To do this, you can try tail pipes that exit by the wheel (like GN's have), or you can try a muffler with a shorter internal flow path. If you have a true dual system, you can change the natural frequency of the system dramatically by adding a balance tube. If you can't shorten the system, then you can add slightly less than one wavelength of pipe. This will also raise the resonant frequency of the system. The wavelength in a single converter system (not true dual) is a little less than three feet at 3000 RPM. Shortening the system by a foot or so will move a resonance at 2000 RPM to about 3000 RPM.

To move a resonance, calculate the wavelength at the RPM that gives the resonance you want to move. Then calculate the wavelength at the RPM you would rather it be at. The difference is the length of pipe you need to add or delete. Add to lower the RPM, delete to raise it. If you want to raise it but you can't cut any pipe out, then add one wavelength of pipe minus the amount you calculated. This will have the same affect. If you add or subtract a multiple of a wavelength exactly, you will not change the resonant RPM.

Wavelength = 1100 X 60 X 1/RPM X 1/4 X 1/2

or

Wavelength = 8250 / RPM

Wavelength = standing wavelength
1100 = speed of sound in air in feet per second
60 = convert RPM to Revs per second
RPM = RPM
1/4 = four cylender firings per revolution (make this 1/2 for "true dual")
1/2 = standing wavelength is half the wavelength of a "normal" wave

JB-370z 05-14-2010 08:42 AM

I love where GTM put your HKS EVC boost controller, looks like it was made to fit there. Is the fit really as good as it looks?

Just wondering why you did not go with external wastegates?

Thanks for all of the information on resonance. I don't think I can delete any of the length of this GReddy piping, so I will try the resonators they place in the cans at the end and see if that helps. If not, then I think I will just try to stick two bananas in the tailpipes. :)

The EVC's fit is just as good as it looks in those photos. The only caveat is that the angle is a bit harsh for the driver and it takes some maneuvering to read. That and at night, the light from it is in the passenger's eyes. *haha* Who really cares about that, though?

I didn't want open dumps, so no externals. I didn't want to recirc them, either. For the power level that I wanted, internals were perfectly fine. Any possible boost creep/spikes is going to be mediated by the EVC. But, I haven't seen any yet. Even with the more free-flowing exhaust.

JB-370z 05-14-2010 09:39 AM

Love the picture change! The unwanted sound you are talking about, is it coming from the mid pipe?
