I'll tell you what worked for me...
I used a pair of vice grips on the shifter shaft... I kept the surface from marring by wrapping the metal with a rubber jar opener before using the vice grips. I used a large strap wrench while holding the shifter shaft with vice grips. This keeps everything steady and keeps the transmission from getting damaged. After the thread lock broke I switched to a smaller strap wrench. The large one will not spin around past your dash. Take your time it's not bad. There is a great DIY on shift knob removal that I followed.
