Car Jack questions

Hey guys, I am about ready to do my first oil change on the Z and change over from summer rims & tires to winters. Anyways I would like to get some feedback on the following pinch weld jack adapter which I know a lot of guys are using. How well does it fit onto the Z's pinch weld's? It looks like the pinch weld may not even contact the bottom of the groove. Is this safe? Do they have a flat bottom? I understand the 1006 size but what do they mean "to fit outside 2-7/8" to 3-1/4" " for the 1007 size? I was looking at the pinch welds yesterday and they don't seem very thick.

I have already purchased the following jack stands. If you zoom into the picture you can see that they have a notch to accommodate the pinch weld and there is a rubber saddle at the top. Will these be okay to place under the pinch welds?

I use the small Harbor Freight jack and it often goes on sale for $59.
I use square wood blocks on the jack spots on the pinch welds.
I lift one side at a time by the front side jack point as it lifts both side wheels. I put the front wheels on Rhino Ramps and the rear on aluminum stands.
If I want to take all four wheels off at a time I put the jack under engine jack point and raise and replace the Rhino Ramps with aluminum stands.

Do many people on here use the technique where you jack up underneath the pinch weld and then lower the car down on a jackstand that is placed right beside the jack cradle? Are you not supposed to place the jack cradle and jackstand only in the center of the pinch weld between the two notches?

You should only use the space between the notches as it is reinforced.

hey kwz! I got the harbor freight version of the michelin jack on saturday. That is probably the best jack that you an use for your car. You won't have to put it all the way under the car to reach the subframe where you have to lift at. You are perfectly safe lifting the car anywhere along the subframe bar. If you look under your car, right by the tire there looks like a little tow hook. That is where they secure the car to the car-carrier when they deliver. You can "chock" the jack stand there (welds are supposed to be the strongest points on metals) or right behind it on the flat surface of the subframe rail. Also you can jack the rear of the car up via the rear diff. You can keep it up by cradling the lower crontrol arm whre the spring sets in via your jack stands. Normally when you use jack stands you want to evenly hold what you are lowering down onto it so that the stand doesn't slip out. Most of the places that I lower onto promotes that idea so that it doesn't buck out while lowering the car onto the stand or while it is holding the car up. Hope this helps...

It just seems like everyone's got their own way in which they jack up and support the Z ... some from the front and back, some from the sides, some from the subframe rails. For now, like I mentioned, all I am doing is an oil change and changing over from summer rims & tires to winters. For the oil change I would like to get the car up on 4 jack stands to keep the car level, and for the wheel/tire change I just need to get each corner up one at at time.

Sorry, but I'm new to the Z and I'm just trying to be as safe as I can. I may not have much experience working on cars but I'm trying to learn.

Using Jack Stand...where to contact point?

just behind the front tire on the frame rail. You can go back approx 6 inches and will give you enough room for the jack and jack stand.

I know where the pinch welds are but I was just wondering where in the service manual are the lift points mentioned.

I purchased the Michelin jack and will be lifting the car using the front and rear jack points with a 10 oz. hockey puck on the saddle. For the front I have to drive up on 2x8's first so that the jack can clear the lip. For both ends, when the saddle is underneath the jack point, the handle of the jack is no where near 90 degrees to the ground so I can only get short handle strokes. I will place the jack stands underneath the pinch welds.
