The "turned by hand" is probably where I went wrong. It doesn't take much movement for the button to go out of center.

I ALWAYS use a center punch before drilling holes in anything. Also, start with a drill bit no larger than 50% of the hole you want to end up with. For example, if you want a 1/2" hole, start with a 1/8" or 1/4" drill bit. If you're still having trouble after following those 2 steps, then maybe power tools aren't for you

I would like to make some "race mode" letters for the booster switch. Anyone have some ideas of where I could get really small adhesive letters?

Model shops or art supply stores, look for letraset transfers.
