shift knobs - plz post pics and comments
I am looking to get a different shift knob to replace the stock one. I am not sure what type/color/weight to get. I have looked through tons of posts and it is very time consuming. I figured if people post a pic of their shift knob and comments about it, that it would end up being a great resource for everyone! And just like the window tint thread, if you were looking to get a new shift knob you would only have to look in one place.

i still think the stock knob is the way to go. unless torn up or worn out i'd leave it.

password:jdm balanced shift knob. while the knob is great, its slightly lighter than the stock shift knob..wished it was heavier, but it looks great, and matches my interior perfectly. just a warning though, the stock shift knob is a complete pain to remove. its damn near impossible to remove without damaging it |
Here is my Password: JDM knob. I just posted a DIY on how to fix the rattle here:

If I change to any it will be the G37 Knob
https://dragtimes.com/images-classif...0552165230.jpg http://ll.speedhunters.com/u/f/eagam...pit%20copy.jpg I feel like it matches the interior just as well as ours with a little more silver... I ordered the black chrome nismo knob and decided against installing it when I got it... Theres another knob thats almost 200 dollars tommy something that I felt and it was awesome but 200 for a knob when ours is fine is a bit steep. And for the Automatic guys I dont understand why they didnt do what they did on the g37 automatics and put a leather boot below the knob.. I feel like the knob sticks out like a sore thumb |

I paid the dealer to take it off and they took it off w/o damaging it. Any takers? Christmas is right around the corner?? |
I have been thinking I would like to change my shift knob, and it sounds like I probably won't have a choice when I put in a short throw shifter. But I haven't found anything I like, what is the thread pitch we need?
I did find these that seem pretty nice, http://www.mgwltd.com/images/srtrace3.gif Obviously it is not for our cars though, has anybody seen on like this that would fit properly? |
Does anyone know roughly how much the stock shift knob weighs? I am just trying to get an idea for what a heavier knob might feel like in relation to the weight of the stock knob.

I have a Nismo shift knob and I like it a lot better than the stock knob. The Nismo knob is lighter and shorter. I do plan powder coating it silver to mach the interior trim in the car.:ugh2:

i kinda wanted the PWjdm, but i thought that it weighed more than the stock knob, not less. i feel like id want something heavier. i find the stock knob a little notchy as it is.

I was also surprised by the heft of the stock knob. But I've never been a fan of the uber heavy knobs. I like the notchiness of the Z linkage, and don't think a couple of ounces either way would make a difference in how it feels.
Shift know preference is so subjective (unlike, say, exhaust systems ;-) |
i just feel like they market hte pw jdm shift knob as if its heavier. i mean, i guess they are really just saying 'its just the right weight' but i find the stock knob a little light, so their idea of 'just of the right weight' might be a little too light. dunno. i feel like i might just buy one anyway.

ProfessorDave, what color is your password jdm shift knob - silver or titanium? Thanks in advance

Also, I read your DIY to fix the rattle. What size rubber grommet did you use? It looks like it is a perfect fit. |

370Z shift lever dimensions
I am looking to make a custom wood knob for a 2009 370Z 6-speed. I know the threads are M10 x 1.25, but I need to know the other dimensions, shaft diameter below the threaded portion, length of the threaded portion, and height of the stock knob.
What a PITA to remove the stock knob. I plan to use a set screw in a machined brass insert with a stainless set screw. Thanks drautox Custom Wood Gearshift Knobs |

I don't understand why you all like the "stick" shifts.
I prefer the round knobs.... :yum: |

The stock knob is screwed on, and the factory uses loctite, so some real force may be needed to loosen it. There are dire warnings that excessive torque twisting the shift lever will result in transmission damage, so the directions include holding the shift lever securely with a padded wrench while unscrewing the knob by the base with another padded wrench.
If it just unscrews by hand, than I guess none of the above matters. Not having a stock knob to study, it would help me to know if the threaded insert in the knob is right at the base of the knob, or is it well inside, and the knob extends over the larger unthreaded portion of the shift lever. I noticed some pics from my website that were posted at: http://www.the370z.com/exterior-inte...hift-knob.html These were made mostly for BMW and Mini shifters, but could be made to fit others if I knew the specs. There might be some interest in Corian knobs; heavy like metal, but not a problem with heat or cold. |
Threads are up toward the top of the knob.
