Stock :stirthepot:

Asking what the best shift knob is is very subjective. You have a bunch of options to consider:

-Weight: this changes the way the shifter responsed when you throw it between gears. A lighter knob will make you feel like each shift is more deliberate, a heavier knob will need less effort to slot into gear.

-Material/Texture: do you want something that has less texture? Metal? Leather? Polished?

CBRich 09-28-2010 07:43 PM

The best? Not sure, haven't tried them all. I do like the Nismo knob though. A little more heft and a better overall feel in my opinion. One downside? It gets really hot in summer and really cold in winter.

I agree... especially coming from a 6mt altima coupe... that car's stock shifter was absolute garbage...

Jose Aliling 09-29-2010 05:29 AM

CharBoiler 09-29-2010 12:34 PM

I enjoyed my Password:JDM balanced shift knob. Keep in mind, this one was a raw aluminum prototype. The production versions are a little more finished. It had a good fit and good feel.

I personally have the Nismo black aluminum and love it. I'm planning on saving my pennies for the titanium GT though  Check some of the Nismo stuff out Here!

what do you guys think about weighted knobs? ITs' supposed to smooth the shift out and give a better feel right? Been thinking about getting this one. I've awlways loved plain round shift knobs

kenchan 10-14-2010 02:05 PM

weighted knobs are good, it makes notchy gearboxes feel smoother.

but the Z's gearbox is pretty smooth already so there will be benefit, but not as significant as other cars. im not sure why PWJDM has a fixation on 6.1oz... or watever it was.

Ty Weezy 10-14-2010 02:06 PM

I really like my stock nismo knob but I am considering the password jdm knob. I think it would look great in black with the red washer and would match the interior theme of my car. Any one else have installed pics of the password jdm knob?

kenchan 10-14-2010 02:11 PM

there's a vendor here that sells the PWJDM knobs and had like 6 or 7 color variations. if anything happened to my stock knob i'd get the black with the titanium collar at the bottom. :p

CCastro 10-14-2010 10:18 PM

ThirdGearPerformance sells them... they are a sponsor here... i love my PW:JDM shift knob I got silver with a black collar

I have the white Nismo on the bottom left on your link. I like it. It's a little light for my taste but not too bad.

Looks really nice. I am still undecided though because I really like my stock nismo knob. Anyone have the black knob with the red washer installed?

I like this one. but damn, over a pound for the knob? your car must shift like butter

370zNismo66 10-16-2010 11:49 AM

^ yeah it's a bit smoother and takes less effort to shift, but it's not night and day difference...

SPOHN 10-16-2010 12:02 PM

I love mine. Had this in my 350. Took it out and now in my G37. Will be going in my next Z. Got this from Forged Performance. Not sure if they still carry these. Great feel.

lol, when I said butter i was trying to compliment it, implying that it should feel smooth

worldfamousz 10-18-2010 12:22 PM

I prefer the ARC round ball style, it's a great feel, and perfect weight...

Here is a pic of it installed on my daily driver Mazda:

I had this in my show Z when I sold it :(
super rare knob...

I've actually got two round polished arc used knobs that I'm thinking of selling too...

The best shift knob in all the lands...

Ok guys I have been reading this thread and it is now time for me to speak up. I have, hands down, the best shift knob in the entire world. It was fabricated from NASA grade tungsten for use on compressors on the space station to convert carbon dioxide into drinking water. My boy made it and had it on his ride, but I made an offer on it and he sold it to me. Not only is it a unique knob shifter (the only one) but it is a conversation piece. Not only that but it doesn't weigh 300 grams. It doesn't weigh 400 grams. It doesn't weigh 500 grams. IT IS 6 GRAMS SHORT OF 800! A WHOPPING 794 GRAMS! It is almost two pounds and if I needed to, I could unscrew it and put it in my fist and call myself the one hitter quitter. It is that solid.

May not be the best feel wise, but the piston from TWM is a good weighted knob at 520grams.
