So I was about to put the lip on this morning....After a closer inspection there were some bubbles in the paint/primer already on the lip. There is no way this will look good un-painted. After runnning my finger nail lightly across the bubble, it will easily take the paint/primer off leaving white dots all over. You can just imagine what happens if you install it and have common road debris hitting it.

So I guess I'll have to get it painted. My neighbor runs a body shop and I'll see if I can get him to paint it for me.

kenchan 09-18-2010 01:31 PM

Yikes, I would sand it all off and start the primer from scratch. I would not trust the rest of the primer that's on there.

Good thing you caught that before installing. Hope others' lips don't start flaking away due to the inferior primer.:eekdance:

EVOR 09-19-2010 10:00 AM

I assume most of you will have the lip painted. The black paint is just to make the lip look good. Under it the gray part is the actual primer. I let factory know about this issue.

370Z JT 09-19-2010 11:00 AM

EVOR, Did you get my last PM?

Upon request, is it possible to have these prepped and reading for painiting? If the black paint is flaking off, it will have to be sanded down and re-primerd otherwise...

NewYorkJon34 09-19-2010 06:05 PM

Evo-R, this is why I PM'd from the beginning about the issue I had, lol Also guys the lip is going on tomorrow.

EVOR 09-19-2010 10:59 PM

okay, I'll ask factory not to put on the black paint. FRP version are in!

EVOR 09-19-2010 11:17 PM

All Pm replied.

370Z JT 09-19-2010 11:28 PM

didnt get a PM. forward you the last PM.

EVOR 09-20-2010 01:09 AM

After saw above photo. I check all the lips that came in for this. None of them have this bubble problem. I looked closely to these photos, looks like some thing was spray on top of it to cause this. Cmike if you going to paint the lip this should be okay, but must be something got on top of it. Did other pieces have this issue? I really looked very closely to all the ones I have. None have this.
6 FRP version came in and only 2 left!

Boost_lee 09-20-2010 02:04 AM

I also inspected my lip tonight and found no imperfections throughout the 3 pieces

AK370Z 09-20-2010 02:20 AM

When do we get the 1 piece cf? Anyone has it on yet?

It was just the middle piece. The side pieces were perfect. There isn't a clear coat on it and they do scratch easily however. It's not a big deal, but maybe just having primer for future products would be better. It was in the box the whole time and nothing was sprayed on it. It looks like moisture or the paint didn't spray properly in that one area.

yep, it looks like it was painted while water was still on it. it's not a huge deal as long as the primer is sound. just sand off rest of the black paint and part of the primer, then re-primer and you're back to square one. :p your bodyshop will know wat to do.

EVOR 09-20-2010 10:01 AM

Sold another full black one. Last one left...

kenchan 09-20-2010 10:17 AM

i think i want the full CF one like AK. reason being, it's too cold out now to paint it. lol

370Z JT 09-20-2010 10:28 AM

I was thinking of doing the prep work myself. I've never done it before though. What grit sandpaper should I use? what primer do you recommend?

kenchan 09-20-2010 08:12 PM

to remove the black i would use 400 grit, dont use too much force. use sandpaper that can be used wet and do the process with either a bucket of water or in your basin with trickling water. the reason for the wet sanding is to keep the sanding consistency. you dont want the paint/crud distorting your sanding surface.

then take 1000grit when you got most of the black off and smooth out as much of the sanding abrasions again using wet sanding.

wash with plenty of water and some soap, use alcohol to remove any oil from the soap or your hands.

dry completely. use a tack towel and run a few passes to remove dust.

if you went through the primer, use adhesion promoter. do 3 light coats. dry it, run tack towel gently to rid any dust.

then take your gray primer with flex agent. do 3-4 coats until it's a smooth surface.

run 1500grit and get it super smooth. do another coat if necessary.

it's now ready for basecoat. :p

3 piece CF is 329. 1 piece is 389. Shipping is also more due to size.

RCZ 09-20-2010 08:20 PM

Wait, do you have a single piece FRP in??

Hell 3 piece frp will work too.

When I was little, a wise man told me "Either go 1 piece cf or go home!" :icon17: Therefore I must get 1 piece cf!

kenchan 09-20-2010 08:22 PM

yah, as for adhesion promoter you can get it at most autoparts stores.

i know for sure primer with flex agent is available at places like paintscratchinc.com and paintworldinc.com but not sure if its available locally.

you might be able to get away with regular primer since the bits are pretty small... if you know you'll be scuffing it up from ramps and entrances you might want to consider the flex agent.

RCZ 09-20-2010 08:23 PM

just a random question. If we order the 3 piece and one piece ever gets damaged, can we order single replacement pieces?

aha! well, considering i have to trim the center piece (due to CF fang) i suppose the 3pc CF is more convenient to cut and install.

So...

3pc CF $329 for me...
1pc CF for AK and others.

You could cut the fang and leave the lip alone. just a thought.

Csquared 09-20-2010 08:33 PM

I want a 1pc CF too!!
