update: I got my camera today. Ontrac delivered it. At the price I got it for, I had to see if it was the correct one (HD). I drop my Black ops cd that I just got and opened the camera box. And it was legit. Now I need a memory card. What size memory card do you guys recommend?? I don't think I need a 32gb card. Will a 4 or 8gb be enough?

 Awesome man! Congrats! I have a 8GB CLASS 10 (the fastest I think). Pretty happy with mine. I get about 11min/GB with my frequently used setting (R3 720p @ 60 frames).

Thinking about getting the rollbar mount

Hey guys,
I'm thinking about getting the roll bar mount. I recently attended a BMWCCA Motorsports event where they didn't allow any camera mounted on suction mount  . Not sure why because when mounted inside on glass with a suction mount, you can't pull it off!

So, do you guys think this can be used on the bar right behind the seats?

I'm also getting the tripod mount

That roll bar mount might be too small because it's for a bicycle. You can use one of those curved mounts on that bar.

As for the suction mount, there is a tap on the rubber suction cup. Just pull it off the glass and the whole thing should come off. I heard that suction cup can pull dents off a car...so just be careful with it. lol

djpathfinder 11-17-2010 09:37 PM

AK, i haen't looked at them lately so I forget the shape, but perhaps one can use an adhesive mount in the crossbar. And if you don't want it stuck to the bar permanently perhaps it could be secired with cable ties?

I even tried using a Manfrotto Super Clamp, which is used in photographic gear, but it doesn't open wide enough around that crossbar.

just added the helmet mount style and video. Big thanks to ilive2win for this awesome mount technique for karting. It works perfectly. The sound quality with open backing is awesome! NO wind noise. Take a look

Location: Right side of a helmet.
Video setting: 1280x720p
Frames: 60 frames per second.
Backlid: Open
Impression: Beautiful videos EVERY single time. If you're Kart, this is the BEST possible helmet mount in my opinion. The sound is perfect with the open backlid. Thanks to ilive2win for this mount technique

PS: In the first video, I HAD to go off course in turn 1. This kart came up very fast to my right. I did feel bad for hitting the guy :o. Also, if you look closely, you'll see that alignment on my kart in REALLY off during left turn. Every time I try to make a left turn the whole Kart vibrates like crazy!!! When it starts vibrating, I must hit brake to minimize it :(.

What Resolution and framerate do you guys like to use most, or find works the best for our applications? What 16 gig card do you recommend for the best quality?

did you guys buy the motorsports version of the regular HD version?

unbelivable. Makes me really want to get one :)

flashburn 03-10-2011 07:11 AM

So has anyone found a mount to use on the interior support bar? I think that would be the best location for recording during track events.

There is no difference in the camera, it is just the package of mounts that come with it that vary slightly between packages.

FYI there is a new firmware out that allows for flipped video recording which is useful in situations where you had to mount the camera upside down.

There is also a new LCD back accessory that lets you preview and read the cryptic settings menu. Battery pack accessory is also out to double your recording time.

For the 3D fans - it's not out yet but coming soon!

It's not a very good mount location for this camera as it is such wide angle. You would mostly end up with a view of the seats.

Really? I thought this video was from that spot:

Looks like a customized mount off the seat headrest or the rear glass. Even at that the view of the windshield is less than 25% of your frame. The idea is to get as much view of the track as possible while still including the drivers hands somehow.

I haven't found the ideal spot yet. Dash works well for view but then you can't see your hands. Side of the car gets the hands and a decent view of the track but then you pick up a lot of noise and can't hear conversation from inside the car.

They probably used the suction cup to mount it hanging from the hatch glass, that is much higher up that the rear bar.

Jon@AAMComp 03-10-2011 11:01 AM

I actually like that angle you have Chris, I'm going to do this the next time we finish a build here.

We shot this video from the windshield. I wanted to get just a tiny bit of the hood in the frame, but I didn't screw down one of the joints properly. You'll see what I mean. Video quality is top drawer though:

Yeah, after looking at it again, I think it is off of the rear hatch. I haven't looked at the camera's features yet, but is there any lense zoom? If so, I think that spot + zooming in a little would work pretty good.

Like you said, looking to get a position where you can see the road and the drivers hands, as well as hearing any conversation in the car.

Regardless, I need to buy one of these!

flashburn 03-10-2011 12:23 PM

Should there be any concern of that suction cup losing grip on the car? That would be a concern of mine when mounting it outside of the car.

Boost_lee 03-10-2011 12:47 PM

As long as the surface is clean and flat, I would not worry about it falling off. Be sure to only use the goprosuction cup mount as it is very sturdy and tested to 200mph I believe. I tried another brand suction cup for cameras and it doesn't compare at all.

I've ran mine on the windshield, side window, and rear bumper on 2 vehicles with no problems

ChrisSlicks 03-10-2011 01:47 PM

I've tested mine up to about 130mph, I've seen others take it higher. Just make sure both surfaces are clean and smooth and give it the old spit wipe before applying.

If anyone is looking for a gopro HD and can wait a few weeks for it, go to buydig.com and enter gopro25 for 25% off. I bought mine there the other day.

AWESOME RUN Chris! loved it!:excited: Love the camera angle and location. Can you take a picture of the location where you mounted the GO PRO? Also, what software are you using to edit the video (and retain full screen)?

I must say, it was the BEST $270 I have ever spent period!

Thanks man. It is attached to the that black glossy B-pillar about 1/4 of the way up. If you go too high you can't see through the windshield, too low and the side mirror blocks the view. I'll pop a picture the next time I'm mounting it.

For editing I'm just using an AVI trimmer, remuxer called AVIDemux. It's got its quirks but it does the job quickly and is free. :) If you want to do fancy text overlay or that then you will need to use Adobe Premier or Sony Vegas which both support wide screen HD video.

sig11 04-28-2011 08:42 AM

Wow. I really like the look of that video, Chris. I may have to give that spot a try at my next track day.

Mounted in the rear window it feels like the windshield is a million miles away. The inside view is probably best for seeing how you screw up though. (like when I missed a downshift).

After a year with the camera I think the view that produced the coolest video was the front/center of the roof. Dragon Run 2 on Vimeo

ChrisSlicks 04-28-2011 09:22 AM

If you look at my other videos you will see that I've tried all kinds of mounting positions :) ChrisSlicks Youtube Channel

I did the dashboard mount for my last track day. Good view of the track and minimal wind noise but no view of the driver so you can't see what the hands are doing. I might consider running 2 cameras.

Placed an order today for the GoPro with forum vendor Injected Performance with Dustin. Also purchased the Battery Pak and Tripod Mount. Had to go elsewhere for the Kingston 32 gb Mem Card and picking up a Cigarette Lighter USB adaptor to charge the battery while it's recording.

Xmas is coming early to my house and will arrive just in time for my run "Brunch Run" coming up on May 21.

Not sure if it was covered or not, but you can flip the video prior to recording. Check the book, it has the instructions for setting it for flip or upside down mode. Takes 2 sec to change it prior to recording!

They came out with that feature towards the end of last year, prior to that there was no way to do it in the camera.

If you have an older camera do the firmware update to get the new features.

Great guys at Injected Performance I will not hestitate to shop there again. Been eying this camera since last years Feather River Run. It's due to arrive tomorrow and memory card on Thurs. I hope the manual is not like a dictionary (fat) because I want to have enough time to become familiar with all of the features and test out different mounting locations. Tell Rob at ZCG he owes me one and to get your car back on the evening of the 20th....j/k. You probably will not be any shape after returning from the island. I was hoping to mount the camera somewhere in your engine bay to hear the TT....haha

I hope I got all of the accessories covered? Would hate to weed thru all the manual stuff just to find out I did not get an that one neccesity accessory.

Nice. When you shot the in-car video I presume you use the 720p mode to tighten the shot up a bit? I'll be up at NHMS on Mon/Tues next week with COM.

Inside car shots - use R5 (127 degrees vs 180) & Spt (Spot) - Spt uses "light intensity" in center of shot (outdoors lite) to better see outside- IF you want interior of car (ie shot of driver) then put on "Cnt" and GoPro will use interior brightness for settings
