Default 3D printable phone mount adapter for the 370z

After installing an Android Auto head unit into my car, I realized there was really no space to put my phone if I had a passenger. The cubby and drink holder are too small and I have a touring so I cannot replace my switches with a pocket without losing functionality. I started searching for car mounts and outside of the universal clip on mounts, it seems that the only 'factory feel' phone mount for the 370z has a few drawbacks. First, it's about $80 and apparently (based on reviews) cuts into the passenger knee room enough to be a nascence. I also wanted something that the phone could just be slotted into without needing to use two hands and something without magnets or metal plates as those can mess up your GPS and compass when using the phone for those functions.

Because I'm a cheap skate with too much time on my hands I started looking into ways to make a factory look option that would stay out of the way of the driver and passenger as much as possible and be easy to install. I've iterated about 10 designs over the past few days and finally have a working design.

That's the $80 one I was referring to - you have to buy both the mount and the phone holder at $40 each ($35 right now it looks like). I've read complaints that this one both digs into the leather (leaving marks if you remove) it and it sticks out far enough to be a problem for the passenger's knee room.

My solution mounts the phone a bit up and out of the way more, and also has a much smaller contact patch with any of the visible leather pieces but does require that you remove the knee pad to fit it (pop out the shifter surround and unscrew two screws to remove this panel). Other than that it's friction fit and holds extremely securely. I've built it around a cheap phone mount that normally clips into an air vent so this is really just an adapter for the mount that makes it very small, out of the way and stable (No affiliation, just like the mount and the price is right https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/...?ie=UTF8&psc=1). Technically you could use this with any of the 'vent clip' phone holders, or simply change up the head to work with virtually any phone mount out there; this would just give a stable base to mount it on.

I'm not trying to sell them or anything, just wanted something for my personal use and thought I'd share the design if anyone wanted to try to replicate it on their car. I'm at work right now, but as soon as I can get the file uploaded to thingiverse.com I'll post a link here if anyone wants to try to print it and let me know how/if it works for you.

I can confirm that the knee pads in my base sport 2011 model do have the mount hole you have circled in red.

Awesome! I'm pretty sure they all do - not sure why I didn't think about it at first, but I ran a search on ebay and every one I could find had the same redundant screw hole. I wonder what that was going to be used for at one point

Oh now that I get to see your mount from more angles, yours is absolutely superior.

I actually have the ProClip mounts. I only bought the base, and just stuck my own little magnetic mount on it.

The ProClip one definitely has a bigger surface area. I didn’t use the double sided tape nor did I dug too deep into the crack, trying to damaging the interior pieces.

This would be pretty easy to adapt to any type of aftermarket mount, similar to how you used their base to mount yours. If anyone wants a custom mount, send me a picture of what you're working with and basic dimensions and I can try to make something work.

Edit- I'm bored so I made one and added it to the thingiverse page.
