TAS2020 Debut: 78Works LED headlights and taillights

These appeared on a Veilside demo car at the 2020 Tokyo Auto Salon

Their website is (LED) but there is no listing yet

The veilside kit is hideous, imo. No flow, just random stuff happening. The older Veilside stuff from the late 90s and early 00's was crazy but at least had . . . a direction. Slapping overfenders on the rear of the Z and leaving the front stock width is also LOL, the rears can already fit anything.

Anyways, no pricing or availability yet. I am not a retailer, just a guy online. I'm sure some company will step up to sell these though, hopefully a US one.

The issue with aftermarket lights is always the consistency and quality of the seals used, the wiring, and the actual LEDs themselves. Can't really measure those without actually having one in hand. On their website, the stuff all looks good, designs aren't too whacky, they're all lights i'd probably get if i had a R/Z/S chassis.

You will not be able to top what OneEightyNYC or other really good custom shop can do; but you will likely not have to pay their prices either. And Japanese shipping time vs. service time/shipping back and forth to New york . . . eh, coinflip

Morimoto made a post about 2 months back about these headlights, they're supposed to be available soon from authorized dealers, i haven't see these tails before, they look sweet.

EZT 01-10-2020 12:45 PM

Those tail lights are absolutely awful.

I agree. I like the headlights but the taillights look like something from 15-20 years ago.

However, completely sensitive to the fact that styling is subjective. To each their own.

OptionZero 01-10-2020 01:22 PM

I think the tails will depend on the rest of car. If you have aggressive aero, unique lights like this will make sense

A stockish car probably will not work as well

EDIT:

thinking out loud - wrapping some or all of the taillight in red vinyl probably makes it stick out less but retains the look of those parallel LED strips

Looks like the paint in combo with the kit/wheels was a bit of a Tokyo Drift 350z tribute, which had a Veilside kit. Song immediately popped in my head when I looked at it.

:iagree: it looks like the taillights got louvers

OptionZero 01-11-2020 08:13 PM

Their Z33 and GTR lights are about $600-700, I’d guess these fall in the same range

I do wanna play with some vinyl options on these...

OptionZero 01-21-2020 03:55 PM

I emailed RHD Japan about these; they appear to be the only retailer that sends 78Works stuff over here.

They said ETA is spring (June), no pricing stil.

scope22 01-22-2020 07:07 AM

They just had a FB update and said pricing will be available in a few weeks...moving slow but they do look nice.

I know how the cutoff/alignment is with halogen and HID/xenon lighting, but how is it setup for LED headlights? Either way, this should be something everyone who's on purchasing these from 78Works should think about unless they live in a country that drives on the left side... unless they just don't care about blinding oncoming vehicles or having poorly aimed headlights.

Truth!!!

I saw some pictures posted today of the Morimoto version (possibly the same headlight with different cutoff). So long as the price isn't ridiculous and the performance is there (Morimoto is claiming better than OEM), I think they'll sell well. They look pretty decent at the very least.

Mike_O_Nite 01-23-2020 08:45 PM

They [pants] are even tighter now!

A video popped up from Morimoto in my FB stories...almost busted a stitch :D

Seriously though, I’m collecting cans/selling blood for my Z’s “play money” fund.

I would like to see the beam pattern on a wall at 25ft.

I just installed LED bulbs in my truck headlights. Easy install, and they do make a difference. Got the bulbs from

https://headlightrevolution.com/

From what I read. You can use LED bulbs with projector lens. The best bulbs are the 55w HID, followed by LED's, then 35w HID. The LED's being the easiest to install.

Ha, I subscribe to their YouTube channel. I assume you bought the GTR Ultra 2?

I would love to upgrade to 55w ballast, maybe when my bulbs are done and I’ll upgrade all st the same time.

Yep. It's almost a plug and play kit.

How is the spread/throw of the LEDs installed on your truck? I haven't paid much attention lately but from all of the videos/comparisons I saw in the past their performance was nice from up close, but the distance was severely lacking (compared to even halogens) and the cutoff was pretty much nonexistent with light everywhere even when using projector headlights.

Big improvement over the halogens I had. The spread and distance is a lot better. The cutoff is the same as factory. If the factory is crappy, then these will be crappy. You have to watch on how you install the bulbs. Because you can put them in up side down. Which will throw off the beam pattern.

Interesting

NorthStyle 01-31-2020 01:56 PM

So and update: Jon at Z1 posted some pictures of these and someone compared them with the 78Works lights and they look to be the same Morimoto lights; I'm guessing 78Works is the importer for Japan. Beyond that, he [Jon] did say the lighting was improved over the factory HIDs to that's a positive for anyone interested in them

OptionZero 01-31-2020 05:04 PM

I perused that thread. Sounds like 78works is the japanese distributor for Morimoto

Do we know if Morimoto is making the tails too?

NorthStyle 01-31-2020 08:33 PM

Not so sure about the tails. Haven't heard so much as a rumor about them from anyone Stateside. I'm thinking those may actually be from 78Works themselves or a strong maybe that Morimoto is using the headlights to gauge the market for aftermarket Z lighting products similar to how Verus did by releasing their diffuser prior to going all-in with their more comprehensive aero...

EZT 02-11-2020 09:32 AM

I know everyone is probably eager to see prices, and here they are. Not bad in my opinion.

pakman370z 02-11-2020 09:56 AM

I think it's a good price for an updated look and better light output.

I wonder if they'll release with lighter housing colors. Gloss black housing might seem weird on light colored cars.

I would like to see them on an unmoded car though.

This is my feeling too. I will definitely get a set if the housing is silver.

TacoSport10 02-11-2020 03:11 PM

I'll place my order today. My OEM's are getting a little cloudy on top. Could probably buff them out very easily, but that black housing will look good on my black G41 paint code. I'll probably post the OEM's on here for sale.

You already have a silver(chrome) housing. If you need a fresher set, you can help me pay for these by buying my OEM set.

Shame they don't do a RHD option.

They (Morimoto) may have a RHD version available to 78Works since they're in Japan, also there'd be no point offering or advertising them to the US market.

Ventruck 02-12-2020 09:08 PM

Put my order in. Going on a black cherry with a 15+ Nismo facelift.

Figured why not in case price jumps up after pre-order, and this is a good bit cheaper than black OEM, which I had my mind on.

Not in a major rush, though. I took regular ground shipping.

Did you order from Z1 Motorsports or somewhere else? I don't need them, but want them, LOL. Did ground as well. Hope to have mid to late March.

Z1

I mean knock on wood, they haven't done wrong by me like I've heard with some users here. They've usually been pretty good with calling me if there's an issue.
