I tried removing it but it seems like the z is not a part of the assembly but stuck in with posts. Without a drawing I'm risking making a big mistake if I go any further. I'm going to mask and paint sometime soon when I have free time. I wrapped the z in matte vinyl earlier and it looked great. I think I might try that as well.
