I know law says that, but they can say the shifter caused it and refuse warranty the service. If the car is apart you have 2 choices...
You either authorize the repair, pay to get your car and then go to court.

Or they sit back and keep your car while the lawyers work it out.

I have seen it done a lot. If the car is drivable while they "discuss" it, then you have more leverage.

The law says drive 55 mph max, but lots of people (including me) drive over that speed and the police end up having to enforce the law. The same is true with the warranty law. They say no service and you need the legal system to enforce it. Not the fastest system on the planet.
