What goes wrong with it? Does it just leak and then air gets into the system, or a different type of failure?

If the former, sometimes you can pump the clutch a bunch(15-20 times) to regain preassure to get a few more shifts. I've did this on two prior cars to get the car to the shop when the clutch master cylinder died.
Concentric Clutch Slave Cylinder

the rubber seals degrade and gunk up the system. it finally bursts which is the sudden pedal to floor feeling. mine acted funny the day before.
