Does anyone know what thread pitch the Auto trans drain plug is? Thanks

If nobody knows off the top of their head, the FSM may have that info. If worse comes to worst, a thread pitch gauge set is pretty cheap.

Yeah, I've been searching through it, no luck. Can't even find a part # for it. I prefer not to take it out without knowing. Looking to get a sensor adapter for a gauge I just ordered & use it instead of T-ing into the cooling lines.

I did a Q&D search of the transmission section and didn't see any specs for the drain plug. I did see the plug in one of the drawings but I don't think it gave a p/n, just torque specs.

I tried Courtesy Parts and couldn't find the drain plug at all. I'm assuming the problem is on my end as I can't imagine CP not selling them. See if you can do better.

Somebody on this site is bound to know. Maybe they will speak up soon.

Thanks South , I actually did the same run down before posting up with the same results, a whole lot of nothing At worst, I was hoping to come up with a P/N & just buy one & reverse engineer it from there. I just don't want to dump the juice only to find I can't get the size adapter I need

From what I remember there isn't a drain plug on the 7AT's pan or did I miss something?

No it's there. Seen it, manual shows it, but no info on it other than they say not to reuse it when changing the fluid

If nobody here knows, I'd try calling a (few) Nissan parts department(s) and asking for p/n and specs. You might get lucky and the parts guy/gal can tell size/pitch by looking at one.

Edit: Or just about any auto parts store. Should be a common item.

Edit 2: Since the trans is supposed to be a no-user-servicable-parts-inside type of deal, the drain plug may not be something every parts store carries. Nissan probably uses the same plug in other transmissions if you can find a cross-reference.

Just going by what I read earlier, there are TWO drain plugs on the AT. One is called an "overflow". (Not verified and I may not have understood what I read.)

That is correct. The overflow is actually used to fill the trans as well. In short, you get the trans to 104F & squirt fluid into overflow with a homemade tube inside of a tube until it flows out & that's how they set the level.

Call me optimistic, but I highly doubt that Nissan uses more than one drain plug design or thread size... That being said it looks like every other Nissan is M12x1.25

Well if it is, I'm out of luck. adapter for the M12 siz I'm looking for is M12 x P1.5x 15L. looks like I'm going to just drill it out & use something like this .

Versa forum and the 350Z forum said that size and I believe the XTerra forum said it too.


A few things:
Add a trans cooler, some say it overheats a tad because you're spinning it so much more.
The trans fluid will be black as night no matter your mileage (There is a TV saying it turns black quickly but still does is job.
I'd honestly recommend OEM fluid. You don't know what BS Nissan puts in it to keep it running great.
And take the top filler bolt of first. So just in case it gets stripped or something you'll still have fluid in your transmission.

I'll definitely be using the Nissan recommended CYA stuff. First I'm going to drop & drill the pan & add a temp sensor so I can track how hot things are getting & be able to better estimate how much fluid break down is occurring while being able to see if and how much additional cooling is needed for my application. Then I'll put some of that thermodynamic knowledge to good use & figure out how big of a cooler I really need for my application.
