Red Line oil change

I just changed my oil using Red Line 5w-30 synthetic. It definitely gets rid of the valve train ticking noise like others have noticed. The engine sounds a lot smoother now and the car just feels better (probably just in my head thanks to the new sound). Good stuff.

Has this happened to anyone else? My friends seem to think I should lay off the crack pipe (figureatively speaking).

EDIT: This issue I had way back in March when I made the following post is gone:

I know I can drive up to 10000 miles on these oil, but I drive about 7500 every 6 months. So, it'll be easier for me to split them up bi yearly. Feel free to ask me any question(s) you have.

 Awesome! Finally you did it! BTW, that'll make 4 of us ;)

m4a1mustang 07-30-2009 10:26 PM

I'm very pleased with the result. I was really surprised at how the ticking noise just completely went away. I can't believe the oil could make such a big difference. I think I need to replace the transmission fluid next and see if that does anything. :)

I did have a minor hiccup, though.

When I went to screw the oil cap back on I dropped it down into the engine bay. I had to jack the car up on the left side, pull the left front wheel and part of the bottom tray and reach around in there and find it. Cut my left arm up pretty good but I find the damn thing after about an hour! I'm going to tether it to the strut bar because I am clumsy with stuff like this and I'm sure I'll do it again. :)

haha... I'm sure you'll okay next time.

AK, you already answered my question earlier. Every ~7.5K for your oil change!

m4a1mustang 08-04-2009 07:37 AM

I don't know if this is just a coincidence or if this is due to the oil change, but I've noticed my oil temps are a little bit cooler. Since my oil change last Thursday night I've driven over 800 miles and have not once had the oil temp reach above 220. The hottest I've seen it so far is about 215-218.

I drove 300 mostly highway miles on Saturday morning through a mix of rolling hills and a mountain pass and the oil temp seemed to settle in right at 215. I went on a spirited mountain drive later in the day and saw only a tick higher.

I seem to remember my temps averaging a little bit over 220 on a sustained highway trip... not sure if this is a result of the oil change or other factors.

LiquidZ 08-04-2009 11:11 AM

I'm also going to be going to Red Line my next oil change.

YamahaR6 08-04-2009 11:21 AM

Heard that once you used a certain brand of oil, you should stick with it and not change to another brand.

Is this true?

No, but if youre doing a UOA you should use the same oil a couple times to keep things to max consistency.

YamahaR6 08-04-2009 12:58 PM

What does UOA stand for?

Shunya 08-04-2009 01:05 PM

how is this Red Line Oil? I've used Motul ever since I drove... I wonder how Red Line does :\

m4a1mustang 08-04-2009 01:06 PM

Used Oil Analysis.

Lab tests are apparently pretty good. All I know is that it completely solved that valve train ticking so I'm satisfied.

LiquidZ 08-04-2009 01:14 PM

I read quite a bit about Red Line oil on BITOG. One member, Saaber1, has torn down numerous engines that have used Red Line oil their whole life. He claims that they are in like brand new condition.

Also, Red Line gets a lot of good rep on BITOG.

You will pay more, but its always worth it in my mind if you can run it with confidence.

I had my car on showing it to a buddy of mine and it did seem kinda loud, I think Ill throw in some RL soon.

Factory oil with Ester additives.

Royal Purple 5 W 30 sure isn't cheap either, especially every 3,000 miles.

Ill be using schedule II every 7500 mi

m4a1mustang 08-04-2009 06:21 PM

I don't know if I can go that long... I'm thinking I will do it every 4500 or 5000 miles.

I think RL can handle it, but Ill be doing UOA to be sure! Ill be watching these UOA that are being posted very carefully. My 350 could go 7.5K on Syntec with 3.97 TBN left so Im optimistic for RL performance to exceed that.

I usually drive 15,000 miles a year. That's why I was planning on a bi yearly change. I don't track my car therefore I should be fine. I do plan on changing it at 6000 mile this time because car is fairly new.

I have had nothing but good results. It was a VERY hot day today (90 degrees) and lets just say I was driving spiritedly on some empty roads. My hottest oil temp was 230. I think it gets harder to bring the oil temp up as the car breaks in. At 7000 miles, I think the car is more predictable and runs cooler than when it had 2000 miles.

i am assuming you guys using the same red line as AK370z suggested on his oil change guide right?

fuct 08-05-2009 04:08 PM

is this Redline have the ester additives also?

m4a1mustang 08-05-2009 04:12 PM

Yes.

370zdub 08-05-2009 05:32 PM

I just picked up my three gallons of RedLine 5w-30 and will be doing my oil change soon! I will post up after regarding my results.

Forrest 08-07-2009 02:47 AM

Did you actualy put the nissan ester oil into the car or did you do a free oil change and the dealer claim they put it in there?

If you don't watch them, then they probably put in Valvoline (that's what my dealer has in bulk). My first change I had to make them drain it and replace the new fill with the Nissan Ester Oil. You have to watch the service guys like a hawk if you want things done right.

m4a1mustang 08-07-2009 06:53 AM

I went in for my first complimentary oil change and confirmed that the dealer put in the Nissan ester oil. :)

Forrest 08-07-2009 07:58 PM

how exactly did you confirm? what method did you use?

m4a1mustang 08-07-2009 08:55 PM

I looked at the bill.

Really, I talked to the service manager over the phone and asked what kind of oil they'd be using. He said they use Nissan's Ester oil in these engines and that's what they'll be using in my car. When I showed up he reassured me in person (without me even asking) that they'd be using the factory Ester oil. When I looked at my car in the service bay the ester oil was there waiting to go in.

kdo2milger 08-07-2009 11:04 PM

my local dealer here says the nissan ester oil is 11.99 a quart...

i went to O'Reillys auto parts and asked about red line they said its not on their authorized venders list, but red lines website says it is...the store manager is researching it to see if he can order it...

My dealer "claimed" that they put Nissan ester oil in there but who knows? it was a FREE oil change. It's simply his words, that's it. That's why I only drove 1400 miles on it:tup: I changed it as soon as I could!

Red Line’s synthetic motor oils are designed to provide the highest protection, cleanliness and superior drain intervals with the lowest friction for your gasoline, diesel, motorcycle or marine engine. We use the most stable components available and formulate our products for wear protection and friction reduction across a wide range of engine operating conditions. Red Line's products are unique because they contain polyol ester base stocks, the only lubricants which can withstand the tremendous heat of modern jet engines. These synthetics have a natural multigrade property which allows our chemists to avoid bulking up an oil with unnecessary additive packages.

Did you pay for this oil change or was it free?
Becuase the paperwork says ester do you believe that must be true becuase it says so on paper?

What odds are greater, Nissan Ester oil making your engine click OR the dude who put the oil in just put the cheap stuff in?

I read all the stories of negligence on here and i am fearfull that even if the paperwork says Nissan Ester it might not be.

I HOPE i have ester oil in my car, i cant prove it, i am going to probably do one more dealer change and then start doing my own with redline oil.

Because the service manager is an honest guy, and I saw and heard enough to believe I was being treated right. They obviously know I know my ****. I just bought a $40k car from them... why are they going to try and screw me over just to save a few bucks?

They go out of their way to tell me that if I decide not to use the dealership for oil service and do it myself to make sure that I use the right oil.

Why do stories pop up here of peoples oil leaking? Do you think the service manager is dishonest when this happens? They were supposed to tighten it.

What if they were supposed to put ester in? its the same situation.

Why is there youtube videos of service tech's stealing from customers cars?

Where ever there is trust/confidence there will allways be deciet/neglagence.

so basicly your confirmation of ester oil is the service manager word becuase he seems trusty.

I sort of think quite possibly you didnt get ester. Why would your engine click with nissan ester in it?

Mine didnt click with cheap crap in it, and it didnt click with ester in it.
Yours clicks with Nissan Ester but not Redline Ester.

The odds in my brain are telling me you didnt get nissan ester in the first place, but i could be wrong.

And is it even screwing you over if the person who changed your oil didnt even care and grabbed whats closest? You never heard a story of neglagence? I am not even implying they was trying to make money off you, just more like neglagance.

I think you are wrong and are being VERY anal. I already said I talked to the service manager and watched the tech. If I'm confident that's what I got, you should be too.
