Whilst looking for coupons through google I cam across a brand of synthetic that I had never heard of; Amsoil.

They make some pretty big claims such as extended draining intervals of 25K miles, increased fuel economy (up to 8%) and so on.

Has anyone had any experience with this brand of synthetic oil or know anything about them?

Thanks!
AMSOIL reminds me in a lot of ways of the vaccum door-to-door salesman.

Maybe they have a good product, but until I can buy it in a store and not depend on some guy running a oil-selling business out of his garage...

AMSOIL has been around forever and from what I've always heard it's the best stuff around. And you can buy it in the store, check your local auto store. The one by me (Ramapo Auto Parts) sells it. I use it in everything and it's never let me down. The guys at that store know a lot about cars and they swear by it (over Mobil 1).

Clarification - if I can't buy it in a nationwide chain store, I won't use it.

Some of the best things come from non-nationwide chain stores but to each their own

No, I wouldn't unless it was recommended highly or was proven w/ street vehicle use and the extra cost being "worth" it...same with AMSOIL and their ball bearing test. Last I checked, there aren't any ball bearings in a car engine.

The whole GroupV vs GroupIV...what makes GroupV actually "better"?

Personally, I think as long as the oil and filter are changed at the manufacturer's recommended intervals, one could easily put in the cheapest oil that meets the specifications and the engine should be fine.

Amsoil, Redline, Motul, et al is recommended highly and has been proven, esp with long OCI's.

Im really just joshin ya now , I used Nissan filters and Syntec in my 350 with amazing results(UOA proven), so Im still not 100% sold on Redline et al just yet. I do have time and money to spare though so wth
