Default How cold is too cold? (oil cooler related)

I just pieced together my own 25 row oil cooler WITH thermostatic plate, my oil temps now are barely hitting 180, and it takes a decent amount of time for it to get off the 140 mark...

If lets say I usually hover at 150-160, is this too cold?

Edit: I DD the car mainly in Dallas, but for the next month I'll be in Southern CA

I while back I read through some threads about oil coolers, and i'd say some folks think you can do fuzzy math and add 20 degrees to the gauge temp, e.g., 160 is really closer to 180.

Something to do with the temp being taken post cooler.

I figure there's other arguments but that one appealed to me due to its occam-ness lols.

You really want oil-temps to hit 85 Celcius or more (say 185 or so) to make sure that any moisture contamination is boiled-off.

The risk with over cooled oil is that contaminants (bascially water vapours that condense inside the engine as it cools - overnight) build up and dilute the oil.

If you don; wish to fit an oil thermostat bypass (these are usually set at 180) then saddle up to more frequent oil changes. The more short runs you do, the more frequent the o/c needs to be.
