Banging sound when shifting

When I shift into 2nd I get a loud banging noise from under the car. I also get the same noise when I resease the clutch in reverse. I am an auto tech and have not put the car on a lift yet! I was wondering if anyone has had this problem before. Let me know, Thanks, Ken
