Man, I wonder about all this. In my WS6, I loved 3rd gear and everyone talked about "the 3rd gear pull". I don't think there is any truth to it, though. I pulled just the same in 2nd as 3rd and 4th when I ran people.
To answer your question, the best gear is the one that puts you in the meat of your horsepower curve and floor it. Shift at redline, wash-rinse-repeat.
